Phone In-Use lock up
Has anyone had their car lock up where nothing would work? The radio and phone and MIDI display? My phone rang and I did a transfer to the car and it just locked up. No matter what I did, disconnect the phone, restart the car, wait a day. I had to disconnect the battery to get ir working again.

leave the car, set the alarm, wait 2 mins and start it again. it will work.
Trust me, when trying to show it to the dealer (I was in the parking lot) it happened. when I tried to show him, it resolved itself.

A Comparison of the Computer Industry Versus the Auto Industry
For all of us who feel only the deepest love and
affection for the way computers have enhanced our lives,
read on. At a recent computer expo (COMDEX), Bill Gates
reportedly compared the computer industry with the auto
industry and stated, "If GM had kept up with technology
like the computer industry has, we would all be driving
$25.00 cars that got 1,000 miles to the gallon".
In response to Bill's comments, General Motors issued a
press release stating: If GM had developed technology
like Microsoft, we would all be driving cars with the
following characteristics:
1. For no reason whatsoever, your car would crash twice
a day.
2. Every time they repainted the lines in the road, you
would have to buy a new car.
3. Occasionally your car would die on the freeway for no
reason. You would have to pull over to the side of the
road, close all of the windows, shut off the car,
restart it, and reopen the windows before you could
continue. For some reason you would simply accept this.
4. Occasionally, executing a maneuver such as a left
turn would cause your car to shut down and refuse to
restart, in which case you would have to reinstall the
engine.
5. Macintosh would make a car that was powered by the
sun, was reliable, five times as fast and twice as easy
to drive - but would run on only five percent of the roads.
6. The oil, water temperature, and alternator warning
lights would all be replaced by a single "This Car Has
Performed An Illegal Operation" warning light.
7. The airbag system would ask "Are you sure?" before deploying.
8. Occasionally, for no reason whatsoever, your car
would lock you out and refuse to let you in until you
simultaneously lifted the door handle, turned the key
and grabbed hold of the radio antenna.
9. Every time a new car was introduced car buyers would
have to learn how to drive all over again because none
of the controls would operate in the same manner as the old
car.
10.You'd have to press the "Start" button to turn the engine off.

per Michaelvgi's points
In Explorer mode, the car would remember all your speeding events (which could be read during your annual safety inspection resulting in ticketing).

HFL lockup, fuse identified
Just as an FYI, I had this happen to me and found little help online. I didn't want to pull the whole battery...
I was surprised when the service manual indicated that the interior light fuse had a lead to the HFL control unit. It almost made me wonder if they didn't design it that way on purpose so you can force a reboot of the HFL system without disconnecting battery or having to reset the radio, etc, etc. Dumb luck or planning to deal with a known failure I don't know but I was happy when I pulled fuse #6 of the interior fuse box, replaced it and found everything back to normal.
I doubt anyone in this thread cares any more but I wanted to throw it out here for the next person that googles for it.
A few key word for the bots:
HFL lockup HandsFreeLink disconnect battery pull fuse "Phone in use" stuck
P.S. If you find a problem like this and figure out a workaround please provide details so others know better how to deal with it. Just saying "I yanked a bunch of fuses and finally found the right one" doesn't do anyone any good.

thanks for the tips on pulling fuse #6. worked like a charm. i was starting to think the battery would have to be pulled, but this did the trick! at first it didn't seem to do anything, but after a minute or so, the MID screen shut off. When i put it back in, everything was back to normal. thanks again!

I found wolftag's suggestion to pull #10 first. After I pulled it, the MID still showed same, so I came back in the house and found this thread. I pulled the #6 fuse and the MID didn't change! However, when I turned the car back on, the HFL was no longer locked up. So, one of them worked for me! :-)
Thanks to you both - and to this forum, in general! I'll be contacting my dealer about the service bulletin. Thanks to loud_whispers for the recall list!
