Cool Navi v. No-Navi

Okay, I'm one of the TL buyers who bypassed the Navi option. Did I make a mistake or is the Navi overated? It seems as though everytime a TL is wrecked someone wants to buy the Navi out of it. (vultures ) What are my options if I decided to put one in?

There are several threads on this issue, one the other day.

You can't put an OEM TL navi on a non-navi TL. The two are wired differently.

I started out not wanting the Navi, but wound up getting it. I am really glad I did. I think you made a mistake, but that's just my Sorry, I am not familiar with any aftermarket options.

The TL is available without navi?!

I won't buy another car without navi after enjoying it so much in my TL. I have no doubt that much of the additional cost of the navi will be recouped when I sell/trade-in the car in the future.

You can put an OEM navi into a non-navi TL if you how to wire it. Basically the stock audio unit connection to the navi display is the same. the only wires you'll need to hook up is the display to the navi unit, 2 to 3 wires to the ECU, few wires to the HFL button (need to change to the one for navi), few wires to the HFL unit on the roof top console and few wires to the HVAC display (clock, need the one for navi). It's not that hard to wire them all. It will take you around 3 hours. ONe hard part is to get the parts cheap, because it will cost you almost 7K if you buy direct from dealers.

My short, not so humble opinion about Navi: I can read a map, damn it!!

My long, still not so humble opinion about Navi: When I was shopping for the TL, I could get a non-Navi for $1000 under MSRP, but with Navi the dealer (and carsdirect.com and other onlines sources) did not budge from MSRP. So for me the TL would have cost $3000 more with a Navi inside it.

$3000 for a glorified map? I don't think so!

I use my Navi to help me bypass the traffic on the highway. I love it. It's less stressful for me to be moving than to be sitting in bumper to bumper traffic. Plus I hate asking for directions.

If you think the navi is a glorified map, then you've not researched it at all. And please tell us you're not reading a map while navigating busy freeway interchanges in an unfamiliar area.

Bluetooth came with non-navi ones too. The non-navi one is only missing the voice control ac/radio and map stuffs.

It is only worth what you put value in. I would not use it and it is generally a toy in my opinion. Spend the 2-3k on tires, mods, etc. insurance. To me it is another distraction from driving. Sure if you travle a lot or like how it looks etc.., get it. I have not once say dam I wish I had bought navi. I think there was one time where I wished I had it but the way boston is with the big dig, it would be impossible to get correct directions with allthe changes that were going on...

I agree

If anyone would pay $3,000 for a navigation system they're nuts.
I love my navigation system but it aint worth 3 grand.

The difference today is less than $2K for the navi. Acura's been incresing the production.

I think the navi's one of the best features of the car-- it's the best navi I've seen so far. It isn't all that useful on my routine commute & errands, but it turns out to be very useful when you go to someplace new, need to find places-- gas, parking, restaurants, etc. & with bluetooth you can have it dial for you with voice commands-- like in the original TL commercial.

Also,

It's come in handy for some house-hunting we did recently. We had a list of addresses we wanted to check out, so I put them all in the day's destinations list and let it sort the best route. It was nice being able to focus on the driving and such and not fumble with a bunch of Mapquest printouts.

Though I know my commute route VERY well, I have still used the navi to get home. There was an accident that completely stopped up the traffic flow. I was near an exit so I took it. On my way down the ramp, I said, "Go home" to the navi and it found me a route home that bypassed the accident. The ramp I took dumped my into an unfamiliar area of town and it was well after dark, so knowing which way was north was a bit tricky, too.

Other things I have used it for: I was running errands and remembered I wanted to pick up some wiper blades for my wife's car. While stopped at one of my errand stops, I used the navi's listing to find a nearby auto parts store. Another time, I was in an unfamiliar area and felt like grabbing a bite to eat. It found a McDonald's a few blocks off the route I was on. There are many of these little instances where I'm glad I have it. Can I survive without it? Definitely. Just like I can survive without a computer at home, TiVo, an icemaker, power windows, etc. It's a convenience that is worth it enough to me that I will probably never buy another car without it.

Don't forget, it also controls the climate control so that it compensates for where the sun is shining into the car. Pretty neat feature, though it's a bit gimicky.

I still think it can't be done. Who would pay 7K to put in the OEM navi. Thats even with doing the installation yourself, which I don't think the average Tl'er can or would do. You have to tear apart half of your car including the dash. YAY MORE RATTLES!!!

The way you say it you make it sound so easy, when it is nowhere near a simple thing.

It's like building a house:
1) pour some concrete
2) nail some wood together
3) put in some wires and pipes
4) add some drywall, siding, and shingles

Wala your done, as simple as pie!!!

My wife can't find her way to our bathroom, much less to the nearest mall. So when we bought our TL, we got the Navi. And she loved it! However, I kinda took the car away from her and now use it 98% of the time.

Well, to keep peace in the house, We bought her a TSX with Navi. She loves it! And she's not a gearhead like me, so the four cylinder is ok with her.

Ahhh, peace reigns again!

P.S. She still can't find her way to the bathroom......
