Thumbs down navi not working anymore

I have a 07 tl type s with 55k miles on it and yesterday while i was driving, i suddenly get the " navigation not able to read disk please consult your dealership" hopefully its not the whole unit and just the dumb disk. What i dont understand is, how i took out the disk cleaned it, and put it back in and it worked perfectly fine for about 30 min, then afterwards no luck anymore. Anywho i took it in to get it check out but the rep told me that warranty only covers up to 50K miles... anyone had this happen to them?

Not much I can do to help but I'd try to troubleshoot a few more problems before you fix it. If its the disk...then you have an excuse to get the new '11 disc! If not, its actually cheaper to send it to Alpine and have them fix it and send it back to you hahah.

At my dealership a few months ago-I overheard the advisor tell a customer that there was a quality issue with some of the newer NAV drives that causes scratches/gouges on the disc (they could tell by the pattern and depth of the scratches). They were going to replace the NAV drive and disc under warranty on his RDX.

Might want to check in the 3G garage for a TSB. New NAV disc typically run $180 +$10 S/H and local tax, if any. Since your Nav system was working-and then not able to read-I get the impression something happened to the disc while it was in the drive. If the drive is bad-it might scratch a new disc just as easily.

Some computer repair shops have a machine that can polish light scratches of computer discs-essentially restoring them. DIY disc repair kits from Best Buy do not work-don't waste your time or money.

At 55K you are just outside of warranty-but close enough that dealership could advocate for a "Good Will" repair. If not, then as the member above stated-call the Alpine folks as they do the repair for about $180 (which includes shipping back to you). There is an illustrated thread with DIY for removing unit. Dealership will charge about $350 to pull it out and send it in to Alpine for repair and reinstall. New NAV drive is MSRP $3000+
