My navigation went out today.
So this morning i was headed over to Acura to get my car inspected after it failed the day previous because of the tint so i had it removed and will retint tomorrow. Leaving my buddies tint store the nav screen went black. So i had Acura look at the too. Thank god for my extended warranty because they had to order another nav unit. The invoice says $3500.00.

So took my car back into Acura to get my screen swapped and it didnt fix the blacked out screen so they ordered a new dvd-rom from alpine. The rep is hoping they include a 2012 dvd. Whats the odds of this happening? I know many people that sent their dvd-rom drives to Alpine received an updated DVD.

^yeah i'll be sending mine to alpine over winter break...i'm also including the nav disc.
from what i hear, since it was the nav units fault for scratching your disc, they replace the disc as well.
it's not like your nav unit just stops working, it scratches and scratches and scratches your disc to the point where it can't read it. so...they replace both.

^that is usually what has been happening to cause failures. some mechanism inside the nav drive that scratches the disc over time. then the drive can't read the disc properly.
idk if that is what yours is doing or what, but that's what happened with mine.

They thought the head unit/screen was faulty... that was 3500 but I'm still under my warranty so it was replaced free as well as the DVD drive that was ordered so I could care less what alpine is charging to repair the drive. I'm getting issued a brand new one to be in Monday and Acura will swap them out Tuesday. Acura and myself are hoping they'll include the new DVD with it. That's the question I'm asking you guys about. Have you all been recieving new DVD with the repaired/new drive? Why would a faulty DVD drive cause the the screen to go black?

it's a car-drive it
hopefully everything goes well and you get a working nav.
I did not get the extended warranty but if I did it would have no longer been good. So far nav is ok (keeping my fingers crossed)

How can tinting Windows make navi fail? he's not in the trunk or taking out the radio or lcd to do that job ha ha... the battery went dead at the shop so what I was explaining to Acura was maybe it could be a voltage issue causinng issues because after they saw that it was black, they took it in and then the screen came back on. its on now BTW.

I did not say the radio wasnt working. I said how would a faulty navi DVD keep me from seeing the radio features on the screen.

Navi for my 2008 TL
Can you buy used/refurbished Navi units for 08 TL's?
My car just came with the regular sat radio and I want the complete navi system, back up carmera and all.
Can I buy that from Alpine, if not where's the best/cheapest place to buy a unit?
Thanks in advance!!

Guys I wanted to update you guys that my DVD-ROM drive that Acura ordered for warranty fix that was on back-order finally arrived yesterday so they're installing it today at 1300. We're hoping it includes the updated disc since Acura told them the current disc had scratches. I'll update you all this evening. Have a great day. I'm loving the 72 degree day in SE NC

Damn, that took a while. I would think they have refurbished units all over the place. It's unlikely it'll include the update unless your dealer is REALLY generous.
When I bought my dvd unit for the conversion, I got it directly from a dealer that was dumping it because it sat on their shelves after a warranty order wasn't done. That is the reason I mentioned the refurb unit vs new when they do a warranty job. Might be why so many fail many times. So far mine is good after 3 years.

Yes it can be done but it will be way more expensive than the $500 dollar premium it would have been to have bought a used 07-08 TL with the Navigation /infotainment package. I guess you could save a little more money and get the 04-06 navigation if you don't think you'd need or want XM Traffic.
