My D-Din install. =]

Just wanted to upload this one pic to show the end results of my double din install. My bro did all the fab work and can repeat the process. What you see for this finish is valour wrapped panels custom fitted to accomodate the new stereo. We also plan on refitting the entire dash with the same valour in hopes of saving what dash I have left from the infamous TL cracked dash blunder. I will post full pics later when the dash and ddin is completely done.

The iphone at the bottom is routed through both compartments. The usb is snaked through 2 holes in the top cubby hole and the iphone attachment is snaked through a very nicely cut hole in the bottom compartment for maximum cable concealment. The usb was done this way to allow for future disconnections to allow for updates or other items to be plugged into it. =D I will eventually be making or buying and modifying a stand for the phone that can rotate 90 degrees or more.
In the meantime, I plan on removing the stock screen to replace it with another so we can use the top for navi/backup cam/dvd or whatever. I have a stock stereo (with code), navi screen, orange disk (works and i will have to find it to get the version) and a non working dvd rom in the trunk for sale. If you are interested just send me a message..if it goes past a message I will make a formal black market post just for you.

If anyone is interested in the ddin customization or the replacement of the cracked dash...please send me some tells and I will get some estimates to you. We can wrap it or paint it in any color you want. I almost painted mine NPB but decided to go with black valour in hopes of matching it to my current dash cover. Its pretty close but not perfect.

Cool story bro...needs more pics...(kittahs!)

Tape job for good fitment and customization of edges. All 4 edges surrounding the ddin had to be corrected.

Flat black after alterations...

customized pieces

had to customize the top piece to rid the gap between the bottom of the stereo and the doors below it.

Lol yeah. I was going to buy a WDP that was very clean, but it had that wood grain interior and I didn't like it at all. Eye sore for sure. I wish I would have known then how easy it is to toss some vinyl over it and make it look really nice.

I will replace the wood grain with a NBP swirl (mimicing current woodgrain just changing color)...I may even just go with some bunny's F*#*ing each other. Either way, I cant wait to wrap my dash in velour and replace the stock screen. I still have to install the front two speakers and we are custom fitting the tweets in that cubby hole above the speakers. Factory tweets location will not be used. I will eventually replace the stock center speaker and may include an 8 in the stock sub location. There will be a total of 4 tweets in this ride. The rear tweets and speakers are already wired and installed. More pics to come.

Just curious, do you really mean velour or are you talking about suede?

What cubby are u referring to with the tweets? Why not use the factory locations? Are u using a 2-way for rear fill? Too many tweets is normally not a good thing.

yea, I meant velour. I'm about to redo my entire dash in it too. Were going to fix the original first and than finish it in velour.
about the tweets...their is a little cubby hole at the 1 oclock position just above the front door speakers. The tweets we have sit nicely in there and will be flush mounted and pointing "in a better direction"..but to be honest...this is all what my brother told me...you see he has worked at an Audio shop for the last 10 yrs...I'm more of an iphone/computer guy. I trust his judgement on the audio setup. It already sounds awesome with the blown front bose pos's and the crappy factory tweets. He disliked the factory tweet locations from what I remember him sayin. For now, I'm giving him a break since we spent so much time on this project making the custom dash install. He does have his hands full with kids now.

I will also direct him to this site so he can answer you in his words. I am taking pics along the way, will post when the entire setup is finally done.

Our cars do not have a Bose system in them. As far as that tweeter location in the door, that would be about the worst possible location in this car. Your brother may have worked in a Audio shop for the past 10 years, but if he is suggesting that location for tweeters, he must not be very versed in what it takes to build a proper soundstage in a vehicle. The whole point is to equalize path length distance as much as possible. The 2 was to do this are locating the tweeters in the kick panels, but this can bring down the soundstage or by placing them up on the dash/a-pillar area. The factory location works very well as long as you aren't using metal dome tweeters as your replacement tweeters. Otherwise, I would suggest fiberglassing and mounting the tweeters in the a-pillars, either on-axis (for soft dome) or off axis (for most metal tweeters).

The door location you are referring to would absolutely kill the soundstage. You will be bringing the stage down, worsening the PLD of the speakers and killing the depth of the stage.

I would highly recommend you and your brother read the build threads here and over at DIYMA before proceeding. My experience is that I am a shop owner and have placed at World Finals in Sound Quality!
