mp3's do play in my TL

Just picked up my '04 TL today - my collection of mp3's burned on various brands of CD-R's all play. From this forum, I was under the impression that mp3's were not recognized. I have ordered discwelder bronze, but will not need it now unless I want the higher number of songs that can be placed on a DVD-A disc (original purpose was to be able to play extensive mp3 collection). Did I miss something?
PS - what a beautiful car.

Did you burn these as MP3s? If so you should have rough 150 songs @ 4mb each.

Are you absolutely sure that your MP3s were not converted to wave during the burn process?

How many on a disk?

The files are mp3 originally, and burned onto CD-R's with Easy CD Creator that was bundled with the Dell computer - I am not sure if there is a conversion to another file type such as .wav. I can only get about 20 songs on a disc.

Easy CD Creator convertes them to standard CD file format when you burn them. If you can only fit 20 songs, that is a sure sign that they are no longer in MP3 format. Bummer... :'(

CD audio is not WAV but actually a different file format called AIFF (don't ask me what it stands for). Standard "Red Book" compliant CDs contain 16 bit, 44.1 MHz audio files. These contain much more digital information than mp3 (MPEG Layer 3) files. When mp3s are converted to AIFF format by a program like Toast or Easy CD Creator, the lost information is "dithered" in but cannot be truly recreated or retrieved. Thus, if you are going to rip and burn for in-car consumption, you are far better off from a hi-fi standpoint if you don't convert to mp3 at any point in the process.

Probably more than you wanted to know.

If you burn mp3 songs to CD they usually being converted into tracks and then can play on any CD player.

I have tried to put a mp3 only CD in the TL and it does not like it. It indicates the unknown format then ejected the CD out of the system. MP3 on CD usually means about there are about > 100 songs/cd. If you mention only about 20 songs or less that means the songs are converted into music tracks.

Ya, I also tired with MP3's and my TL spits the CD out....I think from my research, you need to burn it onto a DVD-R as a "audio" files that does not contain video. I believe that there is a special format that you have to use. If anyone has more information about this and how to get more songs on a disk, please feel free to inform us!!

If you burn to many songs onto a CD, after a while doesn't your lens start to wear away and mess up? My friend who has an '04 TL had that happen to him.. fortunately when he got into an accident which wasn't his fault his entire stereo was replaced.
am i wrong or am i right?

Why are you guys wasting your time with CDs (18-22songs) when you can create DVD-A discs (up to 99 songs per, depending on length). See the thread about Adobeman's GUI. I've got 14 compilations discs of music from my collection of CDs. Albeit 2 channel, it sounds great in the TL.

Unless you guys own an '07 TL, your head unit will not support MP3 disks. As Hawhyen51 pointed out above, if you want to burn a lot of tracks on one disk, you will need to look into DVD-Audio.

MP3/WMA support is an added functionality beginning in the '07 TLs. Only MP3s burned on CDs (not DVDs) are compatible.

For another summary of everything as well as details on DVD-Audio, please see The 3G TL Audio & Electronics FAQ
