Lots of pics of my navi conversion/headrest LCD install

Hi guys,

I've finally gotten around to posting a bunch of pics of my Navi conversion and headrest LCD install. I don't have all the explanations yet, just some pic captions. You can view the page at:

http://www.robertcotran.com/persephone/navi.php

Or start at my homepage and navigate to it. In any case, enjoy. Lots of pics in there.

Rob

Well, originally, it wasn't going to be THAT expensive, but it turned out to be a bit more because of the screens.

At first I bought a "China special" from one-of-those-LCD-stores. They were TOTAL GARBAGE. And if anyone is interested in doing this and wants a quality picture and not just a picture, do not get crap, you really get what you pay for.

All figures are in US dollars even though I'm in Canada.

I first bought Innovatek IN-700A screens. They were total garbage. I paid $250 for the pair. I returned them the next day. I replaced them with TME-M580s from Alpine. Here's the breakdown of everything:

Sokolov box + AV switcher: $355.00
PS2 slim: $140.00
Inverter to power PS2: $25.00
Blitzsafe adapter for audio: $80.00
2 x TME-M580 Alpine screens: $345 each = $690.00
Assorted wires and connectors: $100.00

Total: $1390.00

What's not included in there is the 60+ hours I spent on doing everything. I did everything from A to Z so there was zero labour cost.

Not too bad considering a big chunk of that (> 40%) was the screens.

Which one? Their website still doesnt list an 04 TL adapter.

This is the one thing (reliable, quality audio feed) I have been waiting for before doing a NAVI to Video Conversion on my TL.

Casper42,

Here's a place to start looking:

http://shop.store.yahoo.com/logjam/sounsnhond3.html

Although it says it doesn't work in cars with navigation, it does work in the TL. You have to put a switch on the yellow wire though.

When you turn on the car the yellow wire has to be closed. Then to change source (press CD twice to switch to CD-C mode) the yellow wire has to be open. Then to listen to the source, the yellow wire has to be closed. So it's a bit of a pain for now, but it's so worth it, the sound is incredible.

You might need this one:

http://shop.store.yahoo.com/logjam/b...nsnyitiv2.html

if you use XM radio. It comes with a dongle that you might need to hack with a bit. I'm not sure since I'm in Canada.

Basically, the whole problem with the boxes is their firmware. It's just not updated for the 3G TL yet. The connector is the right connector and it mostly works, it just needs some tweaking for our car. Hopefully they'll come out with a fully functional model soon.

Here's a place that sells it a bit cheaper:

http://www.discountcarstereo.com/detail.aspx?ID=287

I bought it at Autotoys for $79.99, but I found their service to be crap, so stay away.

you can either buy the Soundgate SNHOND3 and then get a honad harness then follow the link for the instrusctions

http://www.logjamelectronics.com/snhond3navinst.html

or just buy this

Thanks for the info guys. i guess I will wait a bit longer. I love my XM and all that Yellow Wire ON/OFF hassle doesnt seem quite worth it just yet.

Zax123 - You SUCK!!!! I was reading your Persephone page and waiting to see the PS2 slim Install pics (I previously looked at that tiny ass glove box and had the same idea), and all of a sudden you jumped from Headrest install to Money Shot and its over. Talk about an anti-climactic ending! So be sure and drop a line in here when you get your page updated with more info. I'm very interested.

Casper,

Sorry dude I'll take some pics of it installed nice and snug in there tonight. Believe it or not, even though it's the slim version, it's still a tight fit. I had to modify the connector from the controller. I'll take pics tonight and post those up on the page.

Yup, Alpine 5.8". I was all worried that they'd be too small compared to the 7" jobbers from China. But it's really fine. It's right in front of your face.

I just did this install yesterday...PS2 slim w/2 7" screens and the dvd to navi conversion. I am having trouble with the PS2 video wire coming unplugged from the back of the PS2. I am also very annoyed with the "ringing" sound I get from the Power Inverter for the PS2. Any suggestions on either problem would be greatley appreciated!!! Thanks alot, Your car looks great BTW

Shans,

You get a constant ringing sound from the inverter? I don't get that at all. I'm not sure what brand inverter I have back there, but it's tucked away beyond the trunk trim so I wouldn't hear anything if it was making a noise.

As for the AV cable coming out of the PS2... I made the hole in my glove compartment very small so that the cable has nowhere to go. Once it's plugged into the PS2, it doesn't have enough room to "back up". Did you make a bigger hole in the glove compartment? Did you modify the PS2 controller in order to allow the glovebox to close? I had to modify the plug otherwise there wasn't room. I bought an aftermarket AV cable for the PS2 because it didn't have as big a plug and the ferrite filter was also moveable.

Do you have any pics of your install?

It's not actually a ringing noise coming out of the inverter....It's coming over the speakers FROM the inverter....some kind of interference ring, im not too sure...just really annoying. I heard there is a PS2 Slim to cigarette lighter adapter at radioshack...if so i'll just cut off the bulky adapter and hardwire it to bypass needing that bulky inverter. I also didnt need to modify the controllers. I used the new logitech 2.8 ghz wireless controllers. They work w/the glovebox closed and I can stand outside about 10 ft. away and they still work great. There was actualy JUST ENOUGH room where I didn't need to cut the glove box for the controllers. Lucky I guess.

Shans,

Any chance you could take pics of the PS2 in your glove box? I'd really like to see the amount of room you have and the size of the hole you've cut in the back... where'd you get the Logitech wireless controllers? How much were they?

Radio Shack already has a lighter adapter for PS2 slim? NICE! I was looking for one...

You wouldn't happen to have a link to the PS2 slim lighter adapter would you?

Thanks for the link dude. If you ever get a chance to post pics of your PS2 in the glove compartment (so I can see the fit of the controller thing), please do! And if you ever find a link to the piece at Radio Shack, thanks! 'ppreciate the help.

Yup.

I have a 4-input, 4-output AV switcher which allows me to send any of my sources to any of my screens. I haven't yet installed headphone jacks in the back, but I will be shortly. For now, the speakers on the screens themselves would play the sound from the PS2. Soon, it'll be a headphone jack.

Actually, the switcher comes from Sokolov too. I found it elsewhere on the net but he had a much better price on it. Seems to do a great job.

Correct me if I'm wrong.... but you used the Blitzsafe adapter opsoed to FM modulator?

And the only way to do this, is to open/close the yellow wire right?.... So, at this point there is still no simple adapter for FM Modulation?

Pls excuse me if I dont make sense as I have no real clue about this electrionics stuff! I just got my NAVI/DVD conversion and am not too fond of the FM Modulator...

Yep, I used the Blitzsafe adapter and I had to switch the yellow wire. FM Modulation sounds like crap in my opinion but I'm a bit of an audiophile, so I'm picky.

I'd get the Blitzsafe and do some switching... it's worth it, trust me.
