Laser Jammer zr3 escort

(not sure if this should be in here or in the BT/sound forums - if needed pls move mods)

I have found a couple threads with people who have the zr3 laser jammer. If anybody has installed it themselves or if somebody would know - how hard is the install? How long does it take? Do I have to drill a hole through the firewall to get in the car or is there somewhere I can put the wires through?

For the rear laser unit - how did you get the wire in the trunk?

thanks for any help/pictures that can be provided!

How much does that thing retail for? Just curious. I have an Escort X50. Not quite a jammer but it gets the job done (with Radar anyway).

Does it do detection or just alert you when it jams laser?

Heh thanks for putting up with my questions. Good luck with it, looks like a very cool unit. I probably should have taken a look at it if its detection of radar is any good... especially since I dropped 300 + tax on the X50.

Ah, yeah, I was reading their website. Looks pretty cool, the shift+link system that combines the two (the laser and the X50). Maybe I'll look into purchasing one. Not right now though, not ready to drop another 300 on something and then pay for install (I wouldn't install it myself). Thanks for the info, I bookmarked the site so I can come back to it after I make some more money.

I dont know which jammer youre referring to in this post but i have had a Fazer jammer/ detector for almost 5 years and have not gotten a tkt while using it in all that time. Its a dashboard model and looks like a an old old passport but apparently works (knock on wood). it was a gift but i think it was about $300 though i was just on their site recently and i think its down to
$150...just

VIK,
I have the same set up what you are tying to do. It does suck to do. Its not hard to install its hard to get them straight. Ill try to get you some pics of the install. This is what I did. I called Passport and send them a pic of our car and they said to mount it in the 2 black grills below the headlights. So what I did was

1. Removed the plastic grills and dremmeled away a piece of the plastic to allow the jammer to fit

2. mounted the jammer to the inside bumper with the mounting screws.

3. The hardest part is that the jammers have to be straight and level. This means they shouldnt point up in the air and the shoulnt point to one side of the car or the other. Well since our front end is curved its hard to tell if your straight or not. I belive mine are but who knows for sure.

4. after mounting them I ran the wires up the bumper beside the air intake. I then ran the wires under the plastic covering all the way up to the windshield.

5. at the corner of the fender and the door I pulled the wires threw there and ran them into the car this way. I did not want to drill a hole in the firewall. I ran the wires in the car then behind the dash via the fuse box area.

6. I mounted the zr3 box ove the panel under the steering wheel.

As far as the rear sensor goes You have to drill a whole in the trunk lid to make it work. Since I didnt drill a hole in my firewall I wasnt going to mess with the trunk. So If Im going on a trip of some time I just mount it to the liscense plate frame like your suppose to and let about 3 inches of wire come down under the plate and in the trunk. Then I just leave it coiled inside the trunk.

I ran the wires for that under the trunk tray "if you have one" Then ran the wire out the arm rest in the back seat. Tucked the wire under the seat and ran it over to the left side of the car and mounted it under the left side trim and ran that all the way up to the zr3 box.

I'll post some pics tomorrow for ya.

Thank you! I do not want to drill any holes in the firewal or anywhere else either. I assume you can't see the wires 2 much with your install, and that would be excellent. My only ticket was from a laser (my v1 went off with the laser alert and 20 seconds later there were the flashing lights, 22 over the limit, OUCH!)

Your instructions seem pretty straight forward.

How long did it take you to do the entire install?

Please do post the pics! (especially exactly where the wiring went if you can)

Points to you.

Vik one on 2 tickets that I got were from laser the other was not having the detector with me.

I was a passanger in my car and we were heading to daytona with the top of the line escort dectector this was back in 98. Were cruising following a car going 105 in a 70. The car pulls over and about 2 miles downt the road the detector starts beeping laser, laser, laser, laser, it talked to so by the time you here that its over. I got a ticker for "owner of vehicle allowed opperator to violate georgia state law. My cousin ended up with a 300.00 ticket and a trip to the local jail to pay the fine and then we were back on the road.

I'll post the pics in the morning for you

one time. Couldnt see the cop though so it may have been a false but thats the only time it went off. NO ticket though. If you have navi point your radar detector at it or the zr3 and watch what happens. of course with a picture of some kind on it

If you lay on your back and look inside the right grill you can see the air intake I just ran the wires right up there and wire tied it there brought it under the right black removable panel up top. Then I ran it all the way up under all the black plastic. I then put it under the A piller were the fender meets the door. Hope this helps.

My father in law is a state trooper so when we go visit he is going to get one of the guys to laser us and I'll let you know how that turns out. probably wont happen for a few months though.

Almost forgot have are you going to hardwire your x50 if so it is so easy this is what you have to do

1 find the spot were your going to mount it. I put mine mid window under ther rearview mirror. Ran the wire up to the mirror the right side of it and wiretied it there.

2. ran the wire threw the head liner. There is enough of a gap you can push it in there with a pencil eraser. Then the only part that I was super super carefull was removing the A piller air bag cover. Its real easy. first you want to pull the snap tab out. That is the tab that says Airbag the little square. It pops out with a screwdriver about 2inches be carefull not to scratch the material. Then its held on with 2 or 3 more snap clips down towards the windshield. Once that was off I ran the wire down the side then down by the zr3 wires and connected it there.

I purchased an ad a fuse from pep boys and used ignition 2 so when I start the car it powers up the detector and the zr3 no cords looks good.

Thanks :-D. I dont have the X50. I have a valentine - so I won't be using it. Although, I have been wondering if having the V1 and the X50 near each other will cause any interferance - because if not, it would be nice to have just the x50 for the display. Oh well - not really worried about that part.

Thanks for all the help - I can't wait to see how it works with the laser gun!

I used the add a fuse for the V1, so I will just get another one for the ZR3.

Im sure you wont get interferance since they are looking for radar. If they were both jamming or something then you would get interferance but if you look at tests when they do them they usually have all 3 or 4 in the same car. The display is nice but I have been cruising down the road and the radar detector goes off and I cant find him then I'll check the rear view and I'll see him creeping up from behind. Id like to have some arrows on the x50 The blue display looks awesome in the TL though that was the selling feature for me. along with the zr3

That is horrible THAT IS A HORRIBLE INSTALL JOB.. NUMBER 1.. YOU DON'T NEED TO CUT OUT ANY PART OF THE GRILL TO FIT... IF YOU MOUNT THEM RIGHT, THEY CAN BE STRAIGHT AND LEVEL BEHIND THE GRILL AS I DID MINE.

NUMBER 2 THERE IS A RUBBER/PLASTIC PIECE TOWARDS THE CENTER OF THE FIREWALL THAT YOU CAN PUT THE WIRES THROUGH.. IT'S AN EXCELLENT SPOT AND CREATES A PERFECT SEAL.. YOU NEVER RUN WIRES THROUGH THE FENDER.. HORRIBLE.....

The wire comes through the firewall about 6 inches to the right of the gas pedal and 3 inches up. check out the pictures of my sr7 install to see where i put the led and control unit

DUDE whats with the CAPS? CHILL out. He did it how he wanted, you dont have to flame him. Give him a break. I thought he did a good job for how he wanted it.

Its OK if you dont agree with his install - just post the way you did yours so people (like myself who will be doing it) see the other options available for the installation.

Thanks for posting how you did your install, I will look at it - and I am sure other people will find it helpful. But, relax! We are all here to help each other, not flame.

Oh, and also - we cant mount it behind the plastic pcs because this is a LASER jammer... it needs 100% clear line of sight, so we have to cut the grill. Not that it really matters - if we ever go to sell the car and want to take it out, those pcs cost less than $20 total (infact I ordered a spare set that are sittign in my basement for when I do get rid of the car)

you do NOT need to cute the grill.. i have the zr3 laser jammers also.. they work behind the grills.. they shift perfectly as I get shot at least once a day traveling to and from work.... if they didn't work.. my license would be revoked by now

you are right i did not need "cute" the grill lol

but according to escort (the mfgr) they cannot be hidden whatsoever. Based on this, I will follow THEIR reccomendations for usage, not yours

I did, however, like your suggestion about where to wire in from the grommet in the firewall. Thx
