Which kit will currently charge the iPhone 3G?
Which kit will currently charge the iPhone 3G?
Is there anything out there that will? From what I read in another thread, the Peripheral kit won't have their new cables out until Q1-Q2 of next year. I need something now since I am about to take a 3,000 mile road trip in my TL.
I was thinking maybe I could buy the Peripheral kit from Best Buy (iSimple) and just use the AUX IN connection while connecting my car charger for the iPhone 3G. That way it will charge the iPhone will playing music (I'd have to control the iPhone through the phone itself obviously but whatever).
If there's any other kit out there that works with the iPhone 3G, please do tell.
Would be nice if we had a thread that compared all of the different kits. I know there are a few threads that compare a couple but most of them seem outdated.

Well after reading around, it looks like the DICE kit is the best solution right now for the iPhone 3G. It charges the phone, supports text (if you don't want XM), and allows for full control through the steering wheel and navi.
For those of you that have installed this kit, did you remove the center console pieces or did you simply use a paint can opener (or a similar tool) to remove the plug? I can't seem to find a paint can opener at any of the local store websites (Lowes, Home Depot). I found one on Amazon but it's like $60 bucks! Might as well just buy a screw driver and bend it.

There is a $30.00 adapter (see my thread in this forum) that'll attach onto the ipod end of all of these units (peripheral, DICE, Usa spec) that'll charge the ipod .. it's a passthru that is powered by mini-usb cable.

Also, I have purchased the Griffin AutoPilot kit. It was made for the iPod and gives you the good old "not made for iphone" message. However, it does charge the iPhone 3G and has an Aux out on it. It is the perfect replacement for my old Belkin. Hope this helps

Just checked my local Apple store's "online store" and they have it listed on there which usually means they have it in-store. I'm going to stop by tomorrow and check to see if they have it.

I just picked up that passPORT charging piece for the iPhone 3G. Doesn't require any external power source and plugs right inline of the iPod cable and iPhone. Only small complaint is now the phone won't sit flush in the top glove compartment because the overall length is a few inches longer but it still closes.
Most of those bad reviews (at least the ones I read) were because it simply didn't work. I'm pretty confident it would work with the dice unit as well but honestly I would just rather have the new cable. With the adapter piece, the iPhone doesn't sit flush in the arm rest and if you leave it out on top of the cup holder, it is very easy to disconnect (it doesn't really lock into my iPhone).
Regardless, I'm happy that I can charge my iPhone 3G.

Yeah I hear you on that, I'm leaning towards the adapter since I can use it on other ipod products I have that don't charge the new ipod nano I have. Plus if I don't have to take my dash apart again I don't really want to.
The new units that Dice has been selling for the past 2 months have the upgraded cable. Those of us with the previous cable will have to buy the replacement or get one of the numerous adapters out there.
