iSimple Wreaking Havoc on Electrical System

I have had my trunk mounted NavTraffic version of the iSimple installed for several months without issue. Recently I started to have major issues where many electrical sub-systems would stop working. These include, electric door locks, Nav, the Nav display, dome lights etc. I took the car into the dealer and they are claiming that when ever they plug an iPod into the iSimple they are seeing all kinds of errors on their monitoring systems. With the iPod unplugged al the errors go away. Hoping Travis can chime in here but at this point I'm telling them to disconnect the unit completely. Is my iSimple defective or is it a design issue.

im surprised you actually took it up to the dealership with the isimple installed. Most of the time they will blame a problem they cant fix on anything thats aftermarket, and try to void out the warranty.

I agree - This was the 2nd visit to the dealer in two weeks for this issue. The first time round I did remove the iSimple and re-installed it once they fixed the problem but when the issue came back I really wanted to leave it installed so they could troubleshoot with it in the loop, which is why they were able to isolate the iSimple as causing errors in the electrical system.

Update - The Acura dealer removed the iSimple from the trunk and once again replaced the several fuses that were blown. I have now had the car back for two full days and so far everything is working as normal. So this really does look like the iSimple was at fault. I contacted Travis (Uncald4) and he is going to replace the unit. Sure hope it's just a defective unit and not a design issue because if this comes back my dealer is going NOT going to cover this under warranty.

Did you try installing it behind the radio instead of the trunk and see if it made a difference?

Can't go under the dash as I have NavTraffic so it can only go in trunk.....connected to the XM unit.

Im glad your dealership was nice unlike mine who tried to say I caused the problem and the isimple was the problem, when it turned out the radio was defective. No I'm sorry or anything beside them wanting to void my warranty

I installed it :-) but there is no way to mess up as it's really simple plug and play with connectors that are impossible to not get right. Plus it worked fine for about 3 months.

I have the same setup as you do so I'm following your story with interest. Did the dealership say that anything else was wrong except that there were blown fuses? Also, what kind of iPod are you using? Do you leave the iPod connected with the car off? I remember reading about using the new 5V charging and connecting cable with the older model iPods and that the PXAMG wouldn't charge the iPod while playing but it would when the iPod was not playing. I'm supprised that the PXAMG would cause fuses to blow as it's just a low current electronic component. The charging of the iPod is another matter. It seems that there might be a problem with the charging circuits in the PXAMG or there might be a problem with the PGHDD2. The connector cable has resistors and diodes wired into it and one of them could be bad.

The interesting point that you said was that the PXAMG worked for a day or two before the problems started again. I also wonder if the problem would occur if the iPod wasn't connected.

Oh well, good luck with getting the unit back from Travis. I would also suggest that you ask for another cable just to be sure.

Thanks that was really great advise about the cable, Travis even suggested that he swap out the cable but I thought that could never be the issue but now with the info you provided I'm going to take him up on that offer and replace the harness too.

Also, your point on charging when the car is off is interesting. I have an iPhone so I never never left it in the car over night (car off) but I did just before the first failure. Interesting.....

my isimple makes my radio go bonkers when it's left in "SAT" mode for some reason...it ignores my attempts to turn on/off the radio and sometimes the bass/treble etc is all over the place. I called them up and they walked me thru the updates and resetting it but it's the same crap. It's pissing me off cause I won't pay for XM if I can't leave it on SAT, obviously. Nothing as crazy as what you experienced, but it makes me nervous thinking it might cause more issues down the line.

yes sir...that's about the size of it, and it's madannoying...don't you think? I almost feel like taking it out, but I can't live with my ipod and there's no viable alternative IMO.

ISimple is SIMPLE CRAZY

WoW I have the opposite problem... If I don't put mine back on SAT before I turn off the key.... At the next start up mine will freeze, be stuck on radio ect ect... I have to wait like 5 or 6 minutes before the unit will allow me to switch back to "SAT" and evrything is fine again... I've got a 2 yr old IPOD 30gig and it stays in the glove box.... BTW mine was originally installed at Best Buy and acted weird so after reading about all the issues I uninstalled it and found BB had plugged the DIN cable inthe wrong port. While it was out I did the software update reinstalled and all was fine for about a month and a half.... If anyone has an idea to correct all I'm all ears.... Don't want to pull it out because I love the ipod but.... the freezing thing is really blowing me

I do hate it...but I'm getting VERY GOOD AT IT!!! lol...
Nicourt...how long ago did you get the software update? They have a new one since September I think for Honda/Acura users...also I would advise you follow the steps to reset the unit. It didnt' solve my problem, but the unit DOES work Better now. I just still have the on/off problem...doesn't last more than 30 seconds though I would guess.

I don't have XM either...but I'd consider that $77 a year thing to have some comedy stations again.

I just checked my download date it was 30 August 09 ver 37b. Haven't pulled the unit and shorted the big capacitor but...... whats the worst that could happen

Hey guys there is another thread discussing the different software versions for the PXAMG. It seems that the consensus is that version .36e is the most stable version. I've been using it since I received my iPod from Travis in mid July and the only problem I've had (other than the much discussed genre problem) is when I didn't fully seat one of the connectors; obviously not a firmware problem. I don't know if this has anything to do with the issues your units have been having but it might help.

Ok couldn't wait so I just downloaded the update 37e

Released 11/6/2009 And the system does seem to start up faster..... but..... If I dont return it to "SAT" before I shut the car off it STILL hangs Granted the "hang" time now is only about a minute but for $149.00 Bucks I shouldn't have to go thru this... Oh well maybe they will find a fix before they reach the letter Zzzzzzzzzzzzz G nite guys I gotta get up early to "make the donuts"

Check out the other thread on this...I posted my results. I think I've found a solution.

I think the older firmware is less annoying and probably not as problematic. Installation steps are VERY important, as I've figured out.
