How to turn off Navigation screen???

I looked everywhere for the answer, but I cannot find it. Does anyone know how to turn off the navigation screen after you are driving? I realize that I can hit the audio button and have that showing, but sometimes (especially at night) I would prefer a dark cabin. The other option is to pull over and turn off/on the ignition.

Thanks.

Push the upper part of the "Settings" button (below screen, left of joystick), then select "Off" for the display.
Hitting any button thereafter will reactivate the display.

Just go into setup and it's one of the 4 screen pages that you will have to modify. You will need to specify that the navi goes to night mode.

Isn't the auto feature just to dim the screen? It's been quite a while since I read the manual. Time to dig it out I guess.

Nope, should change the background from yellow to black as well.

Adjust your instrument panel(IP) lighting to one bar below maximum with the lights off. The Navi will then automatically switch to night mode when you turn on the headlights and/or parking lights.

Pushing the "Max" button causes the IP lighting to go to its brightest setting and the Navi to go to bright/Day mode; push "Max" button again and the IP goes to the preset level while the Navi goes to auto mode.

I have mine set for white background color during the day and in night mode my screen background color goes black. The black background doesn't illuninate the car as much during the night, plus i love to see the screen change colors when I put the headlights on.

Try switching the background color to red on the TL-S. Looks great!

I know it's a great detecter but I don't like the 1980's design. They should have updated the design in the past 20 years.

Screen bother you that much? There's a bunch on this forum who got the car without Navi banging their heads into the wall wishing they had who'd probably be willing to trade with you.

Or ..... you can always smash it wid a hamma.....

I used to turn it off via voice command on my 04M 3.5RL. I think it was...

"Setup" --> "Display Off"

I haven't tried this on my Type-S, but I'm pretty sure that it works (maybe diff command). I would rather say it than look at the screen and hunt for buttons while driving.

push the "back", next to the talk button, it's on the left side of the steering wheel under the Hands-free phone controlls, the lowest button of the two, press that!,,,that'll take you back to the beginning screen and shut it off in about 1 minute, or go to the set/menu button and go through the menu's, it'll take you to the display or navigation to de-activate it altogether!..... I hope this helps!.....but do this while parked!

Not at all, just thinking about the longterm wear, and sometimes (night), I just want to drive in stealth mode. I was like others (careless about navi), but now that I have it, WOW what a fantastic feature, plus, it gives the car a better quality feeling. I will never own another car/van without the factory navi, it's phenominal.

Your post needs to drummed into the heads of those out there looking to buy a used or new(non-Type S) TL thinking they don't need it or it's a waste of money. There's good reasons why the majority of used 3G TL's out there for sale are non-Navs.

As for longterm wear, this is an LCD screen which will likely outlast the car itself.

You are right about the LCD, the LCD panel does indeed have a very long life, the part that most likely to fail is the flourescent backlight. No offense. Just wanted to keep the conversation technically accurate.

I turn mine off regularly, especially driving locally.

If I want to fool with the audio or access the Navi, it's button click away.

But, particularly at night, I like the lower interior light level.

At least two ways to have a blank Navi screen while driving:
A. Start car and don't touch the Navi screen. It will show the warning acknowledgement message, then go blank if you fail to press "OK".
There is no other way to have the Navi screen default to off.

B. 1. With the Navi on, press the "settings" button next to the joystick.
2. Then select Display "off" on settings screen tab 1.

Touching the screen or Navi buttons/joystick will turn the screen on again.
