I had the same problem untill I looked at the voice command help and found out that what I was saying wasn't exactly what it was looking for. Im have a lot easier of a time now.

haha that is embarrassing. it has happened to me before also. just be clear and know what your saying. for example don't say play track 9 and expect it to get it right. it's gone to XM on me a lot of times and people laugh. Say somethign like "CD, Play track 9."

Hope that helped. It helps to know the exact command.

Ultimately, the system does pretty well for one that doesn't adapt to an individual user's voice patterns. Also keep in mind that you're in a moving vehicle with lots of ambient noise which will make recognition much worse. Trying to dictate a phone number while you are on the highway is a fruitless effort. You'd save time and frustation by picking up the phone and dialing manually.

Things that make recognition poor:
-road/wind/rain noise (highway use is very frustating and windows MUST be rolled up)
-accents
-others talking in the car
-adding extra words (e.g. - "XM *RADIO* Channel one")
-hesitating

The recognition is good IF:
-you speak clearly, slowly, and try to enunciate.
-you say EXACTLY the right command
-you direct your voice towards the mic
-you kiss the steering wheel first, pat your stomach, and rub your forehead (similar to "keyfob to the chin" technique)

I just make sure I speak quickly, saying everything virtually in one breath, and that my head is directed at the mic. Even so, about 3 times in ten I have to re-enter a phone number to the HFL system while the car is moving.

You will learn how to speak with it very soon. I'm doing much much better than 11 months ago...

If you keep talking to your system a few times per day, you should be able to pick it up in 3 months.

I've a heavy accent and still I can get it right 99% of the time. On HFL sometimes I get extra 8s.

I get the same, or extra 0's, or both, and I have absolutely no accent. I thought I was the only one! Apparently not...

Navi Voice Recognition: 95%+, as long as I use the proper command sequence.

HFL Voice Recognition (Which is totally independant and uses different technology than the Navi): about 25%, even when I say stuff correctly.

I am trying to connect up with the Johnson Controls HFL engineers to find out what is wrong with the Voice Recognition in my TL. Except for some of the Menu selection commands, it's almost to the point of being unusable.

Also make sure you are on the proper page for the command you are using. Certain commands only work on specific pages, and if you use a command not meant for that page, you will get an erroneous response.

I finally gave up after much embarassment and frustration. It's really easier just to reach up and change the radio station or cabin temperature manually. Trying to dial a phone number is just plain impossible....after several attempts I just grab the phone and dial it manually. It's a useless feature in this car IMHO!!

Voice Command Requires Different Styles with Navi vs. HFL Mode

Yes, I initially had some trouble with my HFL voice recognition in the 2 weeks I've had my TL. But this week, I discovered the problem and fixed it.

Apparently, the Navi/Climate Control/Radio commands respond best to slower, clearer, well-enunciated words. When I used the same method with HFL, I ALWAYS got extra 8s and 0s and sometimes just a bunch of random numbers.

However, when I started to give HFL voice commands in a more natural, faster, normally-enunciated fashion, the whole thing worked nearly 85% of the time. I smiled with amazement (and relief) when I discovered this. It seems that the recognition programming is slightly different for each.

Once you get the hang of this, you'll have VERY few problems. In the first week, I HATED it! Now that I've discovered this, I LOVE IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hope this helps. This site is great. I've gotten so many tips from others, and am excited to FINALLY be able to offer a tip of my own.

I have the same problem that the hf gets the wrong number70% of time. I wonder when they have a new dvd gps upgrade would that improve the hf accuracy or is that not part of the dvd. If that is not part of the dvd thing, is there any firmware for better hf voice recognition.
