HFL BASICS ...is it working or not?

New to HFL with my "new to me" 2005 TL (Base). So I press the talk button and get no response. How can I tell if this works or not? I imagine if there is no beep.... it's not working, but where do I go from here? I searched, but I found nothing on this. Thanks!

Disconnect it and forget it, it will eventually drain your battery. Even when it works, it's primitive by today's standards.

Primitive by today's standards? Yes, but it's still better having it than not having it.

There's tons on it, if it's not responding, it's dead.

I disagree. I set mine up, with only one phone number from my contact list. Too much work to enter just one contact. Then the hoops involved to have it dial that number. Also, you’d be worried that it was going to go out and drain the battery. I disconnected mine even though it works.

Definitely not worth buying a new one if it’s not working. Better off buying one of those bluetooth add-ons.

I must not be aware of different features of Bluetooth. I just use it to talk while I'm driving without holding the phone to my ear. Which is what they all do right. Is there something else it does?

On that note, I ditched the 3G Bluetooth after my module dying twice and just got an aftermarket one. At least the one in the 4G is solid. I use it multiple times a day. Haven't used the actual phone earpiece in the car in months.

Def agree with primitive notion. Just get a bluetooth to aux adapter and it's LIGHTYEARS ahead of the HFL, plus you can stream music

I think some younger people hear that it has Bluetooth, that it will play the music that is on their phone like moder cars do.

My HFL thoughts...
  • Is the HFL in our TL as flexible and intuitive as the system in our former 2012 GTI or our current 2016 Mazda3? Nope, it is positively primitive in comparison.
  • Do I find the HFL reasonably easy to program an use? Yes.

Not as easy as my 2013 Camry. Sync the phone and it's done.

You'll get no argument from me. That said, I still find it useful and cannot complain; especially when viewed within the context of the entire car.

I like having the HFL for receiving calls. I otherwise don't touch it or bother with it.

My 08 Base came with the HFL disconnected. I reconnected it and got the booting up message. I did the oven bake method, but left it in the oven to cool down for an hour before moving it. It's been working for a few months now.

Yes, it's primitive by today's standards (I couldn't name my contact Paul, as it would get confused with zero, according to the system), but it's very convenient and a safety feature in my opinion.

Just keep an eye on it to make sure it doesn't start a parasitic draw on your battery and strand you somewhere.
