Help with Tablet Install

I am trying to find a tablet for my car but I don't know what to choose. I want to be able to hook my laptop up to it to put music on it without having to take the whole console apart if possible. I want to be able to play music directly off the tablet, if that can be done without some kind of integration device. I was planning on using the hotspot from my phone to give the tablet wifi. Not sure if this is possible or not but I would like to be able to play music through the tablet via bluetooth. If you guys could help me come up with my best option it would be greatly appreciated.

the tablet of choice for car installs is the Nexus 7 (2012) model.

I have been researching tablet installs for my TL-S, but im hesitant about getting rid of the OEM navi or relocating the navi screen to the bottom storage area. The best solution I've come up with is to mount a Nexus dock on top of the dash above the hvac/info display. The tablet would drop into the dock and connect via the pogo pins.

The only problem with this set up is the bad viewing angle, sun glare and it blocks part of your windshield.

I still need to order the N7 and dock and test everything out. A test run with my N7 2013 wasnt too promising. I may still end up putting it in the OEM spot eventually.

hope this helps

I would definitely like to check out your tablet install soon. Let me know if you have any free time this weekend. I'm only 15 mins away from wash park.

UPDATE: I think rather than doing a big surgery I am going to just get an iPad Mini and Velcro it over my radio so it is removeable. Trying to find something I can add to give me bluetooth and aux aswell as something to charge the ipad. Im thinking my best option will be the GROM with a bluetooth adapter then use the usb to charge the iPad and supply bluetooth. Is this my best option? And does the GROM even work with the non-navi version?

any reason the 2012 model over the 2013 one? I'm about to order a used 2013 Nexus 7 and I want to see if there's a reason I should opt for the 2012 model instead

Getting the 2012 installed is much easier than the 2013. On the 2012 the charge port and the headphone jack can be moved since it is just connected by a ribbon cable. On the 2013 it is connected to the motherboard so you can't move it. It takes a lot of dremeling into the Ac buttons to get a cord in to charge it. It is doable, but it was alot more difficult than the 2012.

Also, the custom software used for power management (USB-ROM) is only available for the 2012 N7. At some point a version may be released for the 2013 N7, but when most of us did this install, the 2012 N7 was the only option.

timur made a version of USB-ROM for the 2013 N7 as well, but you have to donate to get on a list in order to get copies of it

I'd imagine the power management is probably there on XDA for the 2013 N7 by now as well the way I'm doing it with powereventmgr.apk and a custom kernel/ROM.

I think i'll just stick with the 2012, I'd rather avoid any dremeling or cutting. Although if you guys could do it again would you use the 2013 one instead?

I've been very, very happy with the 2012 N7, and have no plans to change to the 2013 N7. I believe the biggest change is a higher resolution screen. The 2012 is still a great screen, but the 2013 is "better." If the prices were similar, I would probably do the 2013 N7, but for me it's not worth redoing all of the software just to upgrade the screen resolution...

2013 N7: 1920 x 1200, 323ppi pixel density
2012 N7: 1280 x 800, 216ppi pixel density

Yeah I was thinking to spend a little extra to go with the 2013 since it's better but between the 2012 being much cheaper along with the fact that I would have to do extra cutting and probably having fitment issues I'll much rather go with the 2012 especially since the 2013 isn't what I would consider a huge upgrade. If only the 2013 N7 connections weren't located directly on the motherboard
