tablet in place of 8 inch nav screen

Has anyone just put a tablet on top of the 8 inch nav screen? It seems like it would be really easy to sit a ~7 inch tablet there. And from what I've seen it looks like there isn't that much functionality to lose...you can still control everything as normal with the touch screen below. Why not put a tablet there and use it for Google Maps, etc., etc.

Of course you can always put a tablet somewhere else, but that built-in enclosure seems perfect...

Be careful if you are pulled over by the cops as it could be considered as an active entertainment device which is likely illegal.

Problems:
-Having to remove to use backup camera
-Storing tablet in car can be subject to heat issues
-Charging cable can be in the way sometimes

Nice photo. How big is that tablet? Is it actually 7 inches? It looks bigger. How do you keep it in place?

You can get a dash-mounted magnet mount (like this:
Amazon.com: Scosche MAGDM Magnetic Dash Mount Moblie,: GPS & Navigation Amazon.com: Scosche MAGDM Magnetic Dash Mount Moblie,: GPS & Navigation
). If you put that on that flat space in front of the 8 inch, it will obscure the 8 inch a little, but perhaps not that much. If the mount were placed right at the edge of that flat space, it would probably obscure very little of the screen.

Then you put a magnet on the back of the tablet, and it is very easy to mount and remove the tablet when you need to (like when you want to use the backup camera). It's literally as easy as just grabbing and moving the tablet.

It's a Nexus 7. It's not my picture, but the picture poster just puts it right in front using snug pressure to hold it.

That mount + magnet could work I guess. I usually never like to put magnets on my electronics though. You're just asking for corrupted data.

One of those high friction pads that you buy for the bottom of drawers could work just as well.

This "was" my 2013 Nexus 7 with a cheap
tpu case tpu case
. The flexible TPU kept the tablet in place during long road trips but the bluetooth would have to be manually sinked every time we started the car (not an issue with the car but with the tablet). It was a bit annoying. Besides that it turned out to be very good until it died...

Putting a magnet on your phone or tablet will in no way harm it, there have been many tests done from consumer reports, wired magazine to stupid youtube videos.
