Headrest monitors Installed!

I just got back from being out of the country for a week of work.. I dropped off my headrests and monitors before I left to have the 6" screens put in them. I went to the place last night (Chongs apolstry in VA) and picked them up then went to a friends house where we (mainly HE) installed them. I have to say the picture is pretty good, Chong did not want to "angle" the screens because he said it would look a little sloppy. I think the job he did was pretty damn good and I only paid $190 for the install. Here are some pics I snapped last night while we installed it. Right now I have the avelectronics mod installed so I can play them on the NAVI also. I really need to figure something out to do with the audio, right now I am spliced into the XM audio and it cuts the volume in half... on XM and the video. It is still semi loud, just not as loud as it could be. Hope you like them... next will be mounting the DVD rom in the back seat arm rest and putting a 10 disc DVD changer in the trunk.

Yes the monitors themselves tilt a tiny bit. I am not sure if I will keep them this way or not. I might change something in the future.. not sure.

haha Thanks. I can't wait to get the basslink. I ordered it yesterday and it showed "in stock" then later on that day I got a call from the company.. "hi we are currently out of stock........" So now it will take at least a week and a half to get it .

Ok a price breakdown - (without the basslink.. just add $340 for basslink)

Monitors were about $230 for both - $115 each (very cheap off of ebay).
Dvd/cd/mp3 player about $220 (overpriced from avelectronics but I just wanted it).
Navigation to DVD adapter $575 (Avelectronics).
Installation of headrest monitors into headrests $190 (Chongs apolstry).
Wires and other misc things about $100.
Now the installation of the rest I didn't pay for since I have a friend that does this stuff on the side. I would guestimate about $200 - $400 on labor.

Total : $1315

I might be ordering the 10 disc changer from avelectronics today after I talk to him to see if it will do what I want... I just noticed that they have the "blitzsafe" adaptor for audio feed on their site so I will ask them if I could get that and make it work for the audio to make it sound better. I also need to pick up the back up camera since the one I ordered off of a member never showed up.

Blitzsafe: My understanding was none of these worked on the 04 TL yet though.

XM Radio Hack: How are you tapping into the XM? Are you simply taking an existing wire and tapping onto it to form in essence a T or is this going through a Switch of some kind to select one or the other?

it just "taps" into it. The box that avelectronics provides for the video somehow switches between the XM radio and the audio for the DVD. I think it's some type of override thing like it does to the NAV.

My Damn arm is still sore from trying to reach the wires to get them under the carpet. We had fun putting them in though.

The TL is looking nice, where are the pics of the LED lights?

You take the Audio feed out of the XM and loop it through the AVE unit and back out to the head unit. Then you just use the AVE unit to switch the signal between the two.

WOW!! Great looking installation!! Very clean!

Can you comment on your experience with the AV Electronics unit (other than the sound)? How is the video quality, how do you turn the unit on, is the XM switch the component that is initiating the switch to the AV unti?

Any information is welcomed as it appears I now have to have this mod!

Thanks for the comments

Experience thus far besides the sound is really nice. The video quality is pretty good but it's hard to compare it really because there are so many things that are a part of the equation.. dvd player, dvd your playing, screen... all that I am happy so I guess that's all that counts. As far as the switch, it is controlled through the unit you buy from avelectronics... it has a button that overrides the navi screen and you use the remote to override the XM audio. Hope that helps.

WOW!!! Very nice and clean. I have the Av Electronics Navigation override thingy but haven't installed yet. I wanted to get monitors and make a set up just like that. I might have to get in touch with you if i get stuck. I was just wondering about the 5.1 surround sound and if you were able to somehow wire the audio correctly so the DVD's plays surround sound. Also what does the blitzsafe adapter do? Thanks for your help

crajeemonkey - You have to run the wires through the seat. As far as the surround sound, I honestly don't know. I am going to wait until I have another solution instead of tapping into the XM. Supposedly the blitzsafe adapter is some type of plug and play adapter to tie into the audio somehow, I am not sure how they work whether it is FM modulated or what.

mgokool - those 7" screens look good. I had no idea how much room I really had to work with so I bought 6" screens so the installer wouldn't run into any problems.

Still waiting for my '05 6spd navi to arrive... In the interim I've been doing research into video componets; wheels and tires. I am planning to install 2 DVD sources, Playstation, 2 headrest monitors, visor monitor, and AVElectronic unit. My question is as follows (for thoses of you who have used the XM interface to gain audio input) CAN YOU LISTEN TO AN EXTERNAL DVD PLAYER WITHOUT PLAYING THE DVD ON THE NAVI SCREEN, I.E CAN YOU HAVE THE NAV SCREEN ON "NAVIGATION" WHILE WATCHING REAR HEADREST WITH SOUND THROUGH THE SPEAKERS? Thanks in advance...

what do you mean spliced in the xm? do you have the 2 lines connected together? you need to use some relays or some other type of switching for that. if you run the xm through the av box it doesn't sound as good as it normally does.

Kool, your car looks amazing. Do you have kids? My kids will need this in about four years in my wife's MDX.

What did all that run you?

Answered this via pm also, but yes you can have the back ones playing while having the navigation on in the front.

Did the wires for the screen actually fit inside the headrest posts or do they run along side of it? Install looks great, makes me think twice about installing monitors in my headrests.

I too have the problem of the AV Elecronics unit cutting my XM and audio/v feed in half. The XM at volume 40 is like every other source at 20. This really sucks when switching between sources, definetly a problem to be worked on. I'd also like to find a fix on not having to flip so many switches, press so many buttons to get the monitors to play. For now, it works!

one ? here first off nice work looks real clean. Since our headrest are at such a sharp angle and lcd screens are known for not being the best to view at angles. How do they look for you or do they look sharper if you view them direct.

After we got them in and positioned the seats back to normal they were fine and actually at a good angle for most. It's a little off for kids that sit low in a seat but if they are in a car seat or child booster seat it's fine. Once old enough to be out of a booster they will be fine and should be able to view it no problem anyway. The screens we put in Josh's car actually looked really good from any angle.

Yea, I was pretty impressed with how they looked and how little I paid for them. The wires are run through the seat.

I had a somewhat unpleasant experience with the Blitzsafe adapter (or SHOND3 adapter I should say). When I connected the SHOND3 adapter, everything was fine because the car was off. As soon as I turned on the engine to the car, I got this high-pitched alternator whine. It was annoying as hell. I tried to place the adapter in another area under my center console, but that did not work. I tried a GLI, but that did not work. The only way I got rid of that whine was to disconnect the adapter from the XM/aux cable. I went back to the old setup in having the unit FM modulated because I listen to XM a lot more than DVD sound, and I can't pass up the comedy channel!

Does anyone know what sort of drives our cars use for the DVD-Navigation disc? Brand, model, etc?

Guys why are you paying so much for the av electronics crap. The other module skolov sells could be installed with dvd player for 650 you guys are paying 575 and plus install and the picture is much better on the sokolov's naviplus units.
