Getting Nav to DVD conversion & Backup Camera installed soon!!
Hey everyone,
I'm getting the Nav to DVD conversion done sometime next week along with the backup camera. I ordered Dom's PNP unit today and it's officially on its' way to me.
Instead of going the typical DVD route, I'm actually going to be putting one of these inside my glove box which will allow me to not only play DVD's but also play games.
Also instead of purchasing a backup camera from E-Bay, I bought a different camera that someone recommended to me which is completely waterproof, compact, and has received good reviews.
Introducing the Pioneer ND-BC1.
One really cool feature about this camera is that you can turn on the rear view of the car at any time while you're driving and not just when you're in reverse to see what's behind you.
I'll post up pics sometime next week to show how the install went!
Can't wait! Sweeeettttt!

How much is that mod costing you and where art you having it installed? It may be worth a drive to get this done in my 04. Is that a play station 2 console you are using. I have one of those layin in my living room collection dust.
The total cost of this mod including all parts and installation is probably going to be around $700-$800. I have a friend who works at a Tweeter down here who is giving me a sweet deal on the entire installation and is only charging me about $100 total for labor.
And yes, that is a Playstation 2 console but it's the Slim version and not the original one that came out. The original one is too big and hefty and will not fit in the glove compartment. The Slim version will fit though.

sj,
I've got the slim PS2 in my glovebox as well. Please let me know what you come up with in terms of putting a memory card in there. There no way to put a standard memory card and still be able to close the glovebox. I also had to mod the connector for my wireless controller to make it fit. The standard wired controller connector doesn't fit either. When I say fit, I mean you can't close the glovebox.
Good luck with your install, I did the backup camera install last weekend, it's very cool.

Backup Camera: You can only turn it on if you are using a Pioneer head unit, or you run a toggle switch instead of using the bakcup light lead to Dom's unit.
Good luck with that.

streese,
My PS2 never skips, and the lid doesn't need to stay open while playing games or DVDs. It rocks. I even have a hard drive connected to it loaded with games.
kidTL,
I'm using the MadCatz mini wireless controller. Works perfectly. Had to modify the connector to get it to fit though. Check out my website for pics.

change of plans on my end. Instead of going with the Pioneer backup camera, I'm gonna go ahead and get the camera off E-Bay that mostly everyone has been using for the backup camera mod. The Pioneer camera is nice but I think it'd be too hard to find a proper mounting place for it without it looking extremely visible and messy.
I ordered the camera today so I'm still looking forward to getting the install done sometime next week!

that looks great...damn if i can get mine to look even half as good as that i will be happy...not sure how to do the controller but i will figure sumtin out...has to be a controller out there that wil fit...does your playstation sit on a bracket or do you jus leave it sit loose in the glove box?...i dont have the headrest monitors so the playstation will just be playing out of the nav screen...so does that mean if i use dom's unit i would have an extra input for a reverse camera?...i hope this wont cost too much to get it all installed cuz i have no car work ability....thanks for all the help by the way
the camera is supposed to be activated by the reverse mechanism, but you actually wire to a switch instead and have the ability to turn it on and off whenever.. or you can find some sort of three way switch so you can control it via a switch at anytime or automatically when reversing.

Zax nice job! Excellent photos...I think this install is one of the best on the forums. Did you put in a cam?
For now, the PS2 is sitting loose in the glove box. I'm going to find a way for it to be more solid, but honestly, it NEVER skips when playing movies. Games of course won't suffer from skipping. In any case, games are played from a small laptop hard drive I have connected to the PS2 externally.
PAL,
Thanks! I've worked hard on the car and it's almost finished. My body and suspension changes are finally finished so I'll be posting up a full pictorial soon. The car really stands out for many reasons.

I just did the PS2 conversion and the install went perfectly. The controllers and memory cards fit perfectly into the PS2 and allows the glovebox to close while it's playing.
I also had the backup camera and USA Spec adapter installation done at the same time so pictures to come soon!

Hmm....I wasn't there when the guy who installed everything did it all but from what it looks like, he pushed the PS2 literally all the way to the back so that there is no space whatsoever. For the cables that hook up to the PS2, it looks like he ran them under the glovebox which was okay because the PS2 covers all the work that was done.
Everything fits like a charm even with a regular size memory card and controller adapter.
I'll try and take pictures soon and maybe that will give you a better idea.

zax123: that is some detail pics on your PS2/DVD installation.
slimmyjimmy, did your installer mention any compatibility issues with the USA Spec PA11-HON2 and DOM TVandNav2Go?
I've read a lot of installs with DOM and PIE X3, but I think you are the first (that I've seen) that used the USA Spec.
How is the sound quality from the PS2 from games and DVD?
Did you keep your XM?
Any sound bleeding or static?

Actually no. I've played a couple DVDs and games with the PS2 and there hasn't been any sound problems at all. The sound is crucial especially with the TL sound system. The Aux In port for the USA Spec adapter really does work and switching back and forth between the PS2 and the iPod is a simple press of a Disc Up or a Disc Down.
I did use a Y cable to keep my XM even though I don't listen to it just for the heck of it. I read in another thread about someone who recommended that just in case for the future too.
The only quirk I have seen is that the USA Spec bleeds with the XM when both are turned on together at the same time. In terms of sound bleeding with the PS2, this actually never is a problem because once you switch to the Aux In Disc on the radio, the iPod pauses and sound is muted. I haven't heard any static at all from the speakers. So far so good.
I'm really glad I did this install!
I'll try and take some pics tomorrow and post them up on a new thread since this one's getting kinda confusing and messy. I'll give everyone the link tomorrow.
Stay tuned!

waacow,
Thanks. Honestly, the hardest part was the unknown factor. Not knowing what's under the foam in the headrests. In the end, it turned out great, but it was a bit nervewracking. Those headrests are expensive to replace.
