Finally, Double Din
Finally, Double Din
So finally I got the courage to go ahead and put in an aftermarket double din. Now my audio system is totally aftermarket. It consists of:
-Pioneer AVIC-Z120BT headunit
-JBL MS-8 Sound Processor
-Rainbow Platinium Cal 28 Front Tweets
-JL Audio C5 Front Mids
-Infiniti Kappa 3.5" Center Channel (Don't remember the model)
-Sundown 100.4 Amp running front channels active
-JBL GTO7001 Amp for Alpine Type-R 12" Sub
Right now my audio system sounds amazing, exactly how I want it to be. I went from a 3sixty.2 with stock hu to this, and there is a major improvement in sound quality. MS-8 does a fantastic job with sound imaging and time alignment.
The hardest part of this whole install was furnishing a double din kit for the hu. My cousin, who possess some fiberglass skills, helped me all the way.
Sound Deadening was done on front doors. The holes were covered with an aluminium mesh grill and then layered by Damplifier Pro. I still have some more deadening planned. Another layer of Damplifier Pro. Dynaliner on top to kill vibrations. And egg crate shapped acoustical foam behind mids.
So the double din kit is made of fiberglass and then covered with 3M Di-Noc Carbon Fiber Vinyl. The Round circles on the aluminium trim where the original volume knobs used to be, were also filled with fiberglass and then covered by carbon fiber vinyl.
Anyways, here are some pictures of the install. Some pictures were taken with my iphone so don't mind the quality.

that looks nice but I think the screen is too low. If you were to put the "heat/radio display" where the screen is not, and put the screen in it's place. That would look so much better.

wow
well done! love how you got rid of those half circles + the carbon fiber vinyl
not sure if you're a fan of the wood look but you should cover the rest of the console with the carbon fiber vinyl for a more clean look

that sounds like a good idea but i dont know if that is even possible. Even if it is, it's too much work and messing around. Besides, i like how the touch screen is close to my shift knob. i dont have to move a whole lot to reach it while driving and shifting.

thanks!!
I am sure it is possible. People have already moved radio/heater display to the very bottom where the storage compartments are. So I am assuming that it can be done there too. I think you just have to extend the wires from from the button controls I think, And off course custom fit it there. But you seem to already be good at that so might not be a big deal for you.
I like the way it is not too, don't get me wrong, props for a clean install. It's just that it would look better the other way.

I agree that the screen looks better on top but there is no room for the HU up there. You'd have to remove the screen from the deck which would require hacking up a $1,200 HU. You did an awesome job. It looks great!
you know when me and my cousin were making those trim pieces, we were thinking about selling them later on as there is no double din kit for TL. but after all that work, we just called it a day and never talked about it again. the thing is, it needs to be really precise. we had to test fit and sand it back and forth for hours until it was perfect. and i dont have a mold to start making replicas, ill have to start for scratch.
take it to an audio shop or someone who is good with fiberglass, or better yet, diy

Speaker Ideas and Pointers
The double screens look sweet!! I have a 2007 TL type S and am looking around the internet trying to get ideas for a custom install of my own... im not looking to put any speaker boxes in the trunk, but i am looking for amazing woofer and mid combination for the rear deck... I have had my car for about a month now and need some pointers from anyone who is willing to help out... I have the in dash Navi and would like to keep it there. anyone have good ideas on component speaker sets to put in the rear dash? and i like the idea of having another touchscreen below the Navi screen. Anyone?
I used the boston acoustic speakers in the rear deck. I tried JL audio and Alpine but wasn't happy with them. As far as sub used the JL W1 to replace the stock sub but had to invest in a lot of dynamat for the rear deck and the brake light since they rattled after upgrading the sub.

Found a double-din dash kit...
I have an 04 TL w/ Nav and I am putting in the Pioneer AVH-P4200DVD tomorrow. This is a kit I found on ABT Electronics for $40.

Just trying to help with sound deadners, http://www.sounddeadenershowdown.com/cgi-bin/index.cgi
Found this while searching and thought it was great. I have two F-350's we use to travel, 04 TL and a 91 Mustang I am trying to save money for and use this stuff. If money is right will do soon, and try to find someone to test db's before and after.

Great Job! Questions...
How long did it take you to make the trim bezel?
Would it be possible to get the A/C readout that goes up by the clock (the navi one) and put a screen above the unit where the current a/c readout is and just do away with that thing altogether?
What was the total time for install? Standard antenna input I take it? Is the factory antenna powered/amplified?
Amazing work man, well done.
