Factory Speakers

My local stereo shop told me that in order to upgrade my factory speakers I would have to use an external amp due to the fact that factory speakers are premium. Has anyone else been told this?

I recently bought 2004 Acura TL (Anthracite, w/o Nav). I just had the windows done in 35% tint and am trying to decide what my next upgrade will be.

it's not the speakers are premium.... it's the fact that the factory Amp is crap and is running those speakers @ 2Ohm..... so if you upgrade the speakers with aftermarket speakers... they will most like be 4 ohm or higher and the factory amp does not have the balls to push them properly and your sound level will be lower than factory... so that's why you will need an external amp (with balls) to push your newly replaced speakers...

Good Luck!!!

You could always go with Infinity Referance or Kappa series, they are 2 Ohm.

The midrange is so poor, and volume is not as strong as stock. all you hear is treble. So, the balance isn't good. Adding an aftermarket amp will help but if someone just want to upgrade speaker I don;t think it is a good choice.

I wonder if it has to do with the fact that the Infinity's are a 2-way and the stock speakers are just midrange drivers. Because to me the factory speakers even seem a little bright, so I wonder if the EQ curve from the AMP is set a little more aggressive on the higher frequencies. Just a thought, maybe since your thinking of pulling the speakers you wouldn't mind just trying to disable the tweeters on them and report back to us on how they sound.

I actually have not tried them yet. I am considering it, I stumbled on this thread while doing research on replacing the factory speakers. But I wanna keep the look very stealth and stock looking. So since I saw a few people recommending the Infinity's, I started to research them more, and that is when I learned that they are 2 ohm, similar to our stock speakers, so I figured that they would sound better and fit in the stock locations. But since you feel they are too bright, I may start looking for alternatives.

Is yours hooked up right? Mine is a bit louder than stock and the midrange is great. I keep the treble on -1 vs +6 for the stockers. Thinking of turning the tweeters on the 63.7s down and the treble up a notch or two. Not sure if you have aftermarket subs or not. Without my subs the Infinities lack bass pretty bad.

Sorry to hear that. Glad you like the 1021 at least. The Kappa doors are borderline harsh to me too but I have the tweeter/mid turned up. Probably going to turn them down soon. What type of music do you listen to? The only time mine annoy me is old rock like the old Bon Jovi stuff.

Ok, I had to go outside and adjust the Kappas. Pushed the button in the door speakers for a "-4db" decrease in the highs. What a difference! I wish I would've done this from the beginning. Most of the tinny/shrieking highs are gone and it's much more pleasant to listen to. Also makes the dash tweeters stand out more. We'll see what happens when I add an amp. Might have to put a piece of electrical tape over half of the tweeters lol.

The Infinity's are a waste of time and money...
The sound quality is a minor improvement over the stock speakers, but not enough to make all the work involved justified.

Simply put... don't waste your money on the Infinity Kappa's.
I had them for about a week, and ripped them out.
I replaced them with Focal Polyglass (165V Series) speakers... HUGE improvement.

If you're going to take the time to do a speaker retrofit, then spend a few extra bucks and get the Focals. You can pick them up, brand new off e-bay, for about $150.00 a pair.

Jimmy, thanks a lot for your input. I reviewed those Focals and everyone seems to love them, I think I'm going to go ahead and make the purchase. Now since you've helped this much, what would you recommend as far as an Amp is concerned? I don't want to break the bank, but I'd like an AMP that will be able to do these speakers the justice they deserve, any ideas? Also, does this mean I will have to swap out the stock audio control deck/display as well, or will I be able to keep things looking as is. Your help is very much appreciated, thanks Jimmy!

after looking thru the focal website for a bit, I've only seen their 165 models with 4 ohm and not 2.

Are you guys getting 2 ohm versions somewhere or running them at 4 off the stock amp?

maybe you're replacing the stock amps afterall and going 4 ohm all around?

I'm pretty sure the guy with the focals is running them off a factory amp, which I am thisclose to doing as well with my Polk DB651's. I need more JUICE!
