EZ Pass and XM?

I called EZ Pass up to get some more velcro, they asked if it had sat. radio. I told them yes, they said EZ Pass won't work inside a car with sat. radio so they are sending me a bumper mount type of transponder. I asked them how it mounts and they said the dealer would know WHERE TO DRILL THE HOLES IN THE BUMPER!!! WTF?? Anyway, in PA we don't have front license plates, so I asked him if he means I should mount it right on the front of the bumper and he said YES!! Can someone please explain if they have EZ Pass (or something like EZ Pass), if it does or does not work from inside the car, and if anyone has this bumper mounted transponder, what can they tell me about that. I'm totally confused. PS - I told them I wasn't going to subscribe to the XM service so that should allow the transponder to work, and he said it still wouldn't. Sounds like BS to me....

I have I-PASS (Illinois). Works just fine in the car. I just hold it up to the windshield every time I drive through, and I have always gotten the light at the toll booth to register. I didn't want to put the Velcro in my windshield. It also works in my 2003 Ranger with A/M Alpine XM. I have the Velcro installed in the truck.

I see there's a suction cup mount you can get. I'll go with that, and return the bumper mount that is being sent. Thanks for the replys.

E-ZPass works perfectly fine with built-in XM and with the type you add later.

I have FastLane, and had it in my TL since D-Day (delivery day). No problems whatsoever. The dealer even moved it out of my old car and into the TL during dealer prep.

The bumper-mounted transponders I've seen are drilled to mount on the top of the front license plate, using the same bolts. No extra holes necessary. Some windshields have a metallic insert to cut down on glare, and the regular transponders won't work with a windshield like that, so they developed the plate-mounted one.

EZ Pass Cruise Card in GA

In Georgia we have a toll road in the Metro ATL area called GA400. They have a system called "Cruise Card." My Cruise card works fine.

Suggestion...
Try and test it by holding it against the glass as you pass thru next time.

You can go to your state's E-Z Pass website and they should have a link with the list of cars that requires an external tag. The NY E-Z Pass website has it. It's not a thorough list.

I have my E-Z Pass on my windshield and it works.

EZpass and XM and Nav and I can hit the high speed lane at better than 80 .. it shows up just fine. You can also stop at an EZPass window (at some toll authority buildings) and they'll just give you the velcro .. no questions. If you're having a hard time PM me and I'll mail you a set.

Thanks for the offer Brewmaster. I just got back from Pep Boys, got a suction mount for $4.99. Now, when the damn bumper mount transponder arrives, I'll just send it back. (The guy at EZ Pass customer service INSISTED that I use that.) Your responses certainly contradict his information.

A stroke of pure genius.

Maybe when they take out the bolts to steal your transponder they'll take your front license plate while they're at it...

It's called EZ-Tag here in Houston and mine works fine too. Sounds like a big pile of BS if you ask me. Most of the "toll tags" are small radio transmitters. They do have batteries and can fail. I fail to see how a satellite radio receiver would interfere. My tag is mounted on my dashboard on the right front (I don't like putting it on the windshield). It would seem to me that you should first replace your tag before going with the external one. Since the antennae used to pick up the tag signal is usually overhead the tag needs to be away from the metal in the car (thus the typical placement on the windshield) so it can get a clear signal to the antennae.

Easypass (in the car) here in NY works fine. The outside Front plate mounts are ugly....
I wish they could incorperate it right into a nice license plate frame...oh well

I wouldnt worry about it too much. These technical guys sometimes get too technical for their own self. I have E Pass here in orlando florida, and it works just fine. Think about it, you can use your home phone, and your wireless internet (if you have one) all at the same time. Even though they might work on same frequencies like 2.4 Ghz (but different channels). Think of these big corporations, they kind of work out all the scenarios before launching a product. I am sure our sattelite radios and Ez pass transponders work in very different frequency ranges. You really should be fine. No drilling required !!!

Oh wow, I got the bumper transponder in the mail. NO WAY would I put that on my new baby. Holy shit, no one in their right mind would. It's already in the mail back to them. I hate to be so anal, but if you mount the suction cup one behind the mirror and it lets loose (as these things tend to do), it looks like it will come down right on the navi screen. Looks like I'm just going to mount it in the corner, so if it falls it won't do any damage. On another topic, I got those superbrightleds today and installed the blue ones in the door. Nice mod that took all of 15 seconds. If you don't know what I'm talking about, do a search. Didn't mean to start a thread within a thread, but I just got them in and they are sweeeeeet.

Boy you got a real cockamaimy story. XM can't cause problems with easypass. The XM signals are received in the air everywere if you have XM or not. The radio can't interfere it does not transmitt. The only thing that can interfer is something blocking the path of the RFID transmitter that polls the receiver you install on the windsheld. Standard installation will work. I travel NY, NJ and Mass no problems.

Just a brief comment. There are some vehicles that have metalic parts in the windsheld for heating elements etc. which prevent the tags from being read properly. Those need external installations.
