Engine noise through speakers?

When I turn the radio on even when the volume is at 1 I get engine wine through the speakers. What can I check that may solve this?

It is all stock. Not sure what the previous owner may have done.

When I started the car I hear a wine when ever the radio is on. It does not get really loud the faster I got, but if I turn the radio down to a lower setting 1-10 I can hear the wine it changes a little with RPM but does not get much louder.

I have not tried it with a CD, only the radio. I have a Monster device that plays my portable sat radio over the fm waves and it does it with that as well.

I have also noticed that I do not really get any bass from the sub, do they normally have decent bass?

Guess when I get back home I will try and dive into it and see if I can find any aftermarket things on it any where. But so far all looks stock.

Sounds like a grounding issue.

The weird part is that at highway speeds it seems to disappear. What all grounds should I check?

Here is a harness I found under the passenger seat. I appears to still be connected some where but nothing is plugged into it.

that harness looks like an aftermarket video input trace the wire and make sure its plugged in good and not grounding somewhere.
THEN, check your alternator wires. Take off the big wire at the alternator, clean it and put it back on. Do the same with the battery terminal wires.
use some dielectric grease to increase the conductivity and prevent corrosion.
that should fix your problem.

I had a few minutes to check the car out some more today.

I found a step down bouncing around the rear deck so I removed it and put electrical tape around the wires.

There was a large amp power wire (possibly zero gauge) that was still connected to the battery so I disconcerted it. It has a 100 amp fuse in it.

Also where I found that harness further under the seat there is a 2nd one, so who ever had this car had a pretty good setup in it. I am guessing that when they removed everything, or the parts they did something is not grounded right or grounded that should not be.

When I have more time I am going to clean all of the battery cables and coat them, then remove the passenger seat and see what I can find out about those harnesses.

I can not believe the previous owner of this car is not a member here. Is there another large TL forum I can check and see of someone recognizes this car?

I noticed today that the only speaker the noise is coming from is the front left tweeter in the dash. How can I get to this speaker to disconnect it, and what could I look for that would be causing just this speaker to make noise?

My ground kit should be here Fri or Monday so I will be installing that soon to test out.

I have half of the ground kit installed and also put in a new set of plugs. I found where the previous owner had a system installed and wrapped all of the wires in electrical tape.

I am about ready to rip the radio out, the noise is driving me crazy. Can anyone recommend anything else?

The tweeters are run in parallel with the door speakers. If you have the "alternator whine" with the tweeter and not with the door mid range then you might want to look for something in the wiring between the tweeter and the amp. If I remember right the mid-woof is run full range from the amp and the tweeter has a high pass filter capacitor run between its terminals. They should be seeing the same signal.

If what you are describing is "alternator whine" test to see if the pitch of the sound changes with RPMs. Also check to see if the sound stays only in the left tweeter as you change RPMs (You can do this while you are in neutral in you garage). Alternator whine is almost always caused by a poor ground somewhere in the system. With the previous owner pulling out his equipment it sure sounds like he left an ungrounded circuit somewhere.

The tweeters just pull or pry out of the dash (there are a bunch of threads on replacing the tweets).

Good luck, I know how frustrating this can be.

I unplugged the FL tweeter and can still hear it in the system. It does change with the RPM, but not that much.

I still need to clean the alt wire and check a few more things, if I can't get it then I may have to take it some where. I do not even listen to the radio or use the HFL because of this.
