DVD & camera installation quote

I was quoted $950 to have the dvd player and back up camera installed. I would do it myself, but I don't want to screw up and mess up my Navi.

what do you think?

WOW......thats rape. If you take your time others have been able to do the install in a day. I'm in the process myself right now. Spreading it out over a 4 day time span. From reading and watching others install it is not all that difficult looking. Its literally just crimping wires, running wires, and plugging in connectors. If I was goning to pay someone to do it, and the thought crossed my mind; $250 would have been all I was willing to pay. Its just not that hard of an install, espically with all the DIY's out there explaining all the steps invloved.

the price was for everything included. I believe the dvd player was $200. I don't know the cost of the camera, but thats what I was quoted. He told me it was 3 hours worth of work.

I knew it sounded way too much. I was breaking it down in head....$125 for the PnP, about $100 for the camera, and i'll go with his $200 dvd player = $425

Does anyone know a place in the Northern NJ area that can do this? Or any of you guys that have done live in the area that can help me do the install?

$925 is not terribly steep...I'd expect you to pay maybe $800-$850.

I'd do it myself and save the labor rates, but it sounds like that's not an option for you.

Just FYI, Dom's TVandNav2Go with PNP harness is $125 + $100. Shipped came out to be around $240 for me.

Also, I don't see any audio interfaces included in the price. The TL does not have any means for you to add audio for your DVD unless you purchase an aftermarket audio interface. Blitzsafe, PIE, or USA Spec will run you around $80-$120.

DOM Converter $125
DOM PNP $100
DVD Player $200
Camera $115
Shipping for stuff $50

So that means your install is roughly $350, alittle steep but if it is within your budget then go that route. Unless you want to spend some quality 1 on 1 with your new ride

^ Still missing the price of the audio interface. Also, if you DIY, you have to consider about the tools and materials (cables and wires) required. For instance, if you don't have a rotary tool or crimping tool, you will have to borrow or purchase them. I'm not trying to pursuade you away from a DIY. Just trying to give you a more accurate estimate of DIY vs shop. My shielded Monster cables ended up costing me around $50. Doubt the shop will be using anything that fancy.

You should consider getting a quote for labor costs if you provide all the hardware.

I'm glad I asked about this here b/c to me it seemed like a lot of money in labor, but with you guys braking it down for me it doesn't seem so bad. Plus the quote for the installation was from Dom at TVandNAV2GO. So i know the job will get done right.

I think i'm gonna start saving up.

I'd pay him to do it if I were you. Better to not be cheap and let a pro do it if you have to second guess yourself. Consider $100 or so of that quote to be for the piece of mind if it makes you feel any better.

i was quoted approx 200 for just the install, about 900 for dvd and valor ipod link. i don't think 950 is too outrageous. but datmrman brought up a good point about the type of cables they'd be using... i'm sure they'd cut costs whever they could.

I can probably supply my own cables if I wanted.
