Question DVD-Audio - How to get maximum record time ?

The post below (cut from our FAQ section) seems to indicate that we should be able to get up to 25hours Mono at 44.1 16bit. Is this achievable ?

I am trying to put an audio book which is 16:18:25 long, onto one DVD but can't fit it. When I do 44.1 x 16 x mono my files come out to 4.8gig.
5,166,720,282 bytes

Mono (1 full bandwidth track):
16/44.1kHz - up to 1500 minutes of audio

Stereo (2 full bandwidth tracks):
16/44.1kHz - up to 720 minutes of audio
24/96kHz - up to 240 minutes of audio
24/192kHz - up to 120 minutes of audio

Surround (5 full bandwidth tracks + 1 sub track):
24/96kHz - up to 100 minutes of audio

Surround (6 full bandwidth tracks):
24/96kHz - up to 86 minutes of audio

Even DVD-V does not limit frequency response in any speaker except the subwoofer, so perhaps the original poster was thinking of older analog matrixing surround encode/decode methods such as Dolby Pro Logic???

Credit to Adobeman. I am using his excellent scripts mentioned in this thread: https://acurazine.com/forums/showthread.php?t=118963

Burn with Nero 6.3 a Pioneer DVR-109 burner with Precision Digital (generic) 8x DVD-R blanks I managed to get the 16 hour audio book onto 2 DVDs. I was hoping to squeeze it onto one disk. Since the files are mono it should be doable.

1500 of mono minutes doesn't sound right. I don't have the exact numbers, but I couldn't fit 11 CDs on a DVD-R. Most of the CDs were under 50 minutes long, so they couldn't total to more than 720 of stereo minutes.

I am not sure this is correct. I believe you would need MLP encoding to get this much surround time at 24/96.

oblio98, you are right! I didn't notice that djsteve example is for MLP. MLP is a proprietory compression algorythm, which can't be used (legally) in home-made DVDs. Without it capacity will be 1.5-2 times lower.

I thought so. I have made my own 24/96 DVD-A's using old quadraphonic reel tapes. This can be done because these reels have only 4 channels (no center, no sub), so I can get 45 or so minutes at 24/96 at 4.0. I tried 5.1 and got under 30 minutes (IIRC).

MLP can be done, however, it's expensive. One way is to use Minnetonka's DiscWelder Chrome and their MLP Encoder, which I think together go for around $5000!!!

Puts it out of reach for us "mortals"!

Thumbs up another option, double layer

I'm going to post a thread on this and related matters (concerts from HDTV), but to be short here, the DVD in the TL will read double layer dvd disks...that's 8.5 gigs of data...I am using RiDATA DVD+R DL disks...works great for books.

More later...

Excellent news. Just learned my new DVD-writer does DL disks so I'll be looking forward to greater capacities.

Thanks for the advice, but I won't buy any blank media unless it is made in Japan. Memorex are made in Indonesia or Taiwan. Been there, done that, won't be back. (Unless you have Memorex made in Japan that is!)

It does!!!??? Can Adobeman's script be altered to work with dual-layer DVDs?

Dual Layer DVDs

Just checked my DL and they are made in Taiwan but i've burned 7 of them all perfectly using each group for either an artists or album. I'm out of music to burn now.

And to the other question about altering "A" mans (The King in my books) script, not necessary as the script will create an ISO from whatever you put in the grp folders regardless of size, your burner has to support DL disks.

That's why you have to watch the size of your wavs folder for single layer disks to make sure you don't create an ISO that won't fit.

Excellent. For course, now I'm stuck with a bunch of single-layer discs I don't need because I was under the impression our car doesn't read DL discs.

I think I'm going to record a "Time to Change Group... ... ..." .WAV file and use it as the last track in each group. This way I get a chance to change groups before the ELS swaps disks forcing me to reselect the disk and then change groups.

Hey, any of you with a GF, wife or sis with a voice to die for ?

Very cool Idea

If you find a sexy voice can you post the wav files?

I was going to do something like that too. I was either going to have a separate track or have it at the end of the last song, like a hidden track (just add 30 seconds of silence or similar).
