DVD-A...anyone buy any titles yet?

Just bought the Metallica "Black" album and The Police's greatest hits. This 5.1 surround 6 channel audio separation is simply a delight to the ears. I am particularly impressed with listening to The Police in DVD-A format. The clarity and distinction of the instruments is amazing to hear. No need to alter the settings as in the 2 channel CD format. I may even start to get into more classical music now...it is that impressive.

Anyone else as impressed with DVD-A? I hope the music industry pumps out more titles for 5.1 DVD-A. It is my understanding that SACD is a competitor that Sony is pushing. That's too bad because I notice a lot of artists I like are under the Sony umbrella. Hopefully DVD-A prevails in this battle.

I own Ryan Adams- Gold on dvd-a. The instruments sound great. You can hear the soundstage.

Police is actually DTS, not DVD-A, isn't it? I have it in DTS for the car and on SACD for my home system. It's one of the best titles out there in terms of the music. REM's Document sounds awesome, too--and is a great album.

You are correct that its DTS. Sounds unbelievable in the TL. I can't listen to it less than 30 on the volume!!! I'm thinking 5.1 is going to make me lose my hearing!!

So far I have purchased....

Legion of Boom
by: The Crystal Method

Up!
by: Shania Twain

Goodbye Yellow Brick Road
by: Elton John

All are great albums. The 5.1 is just fantasitic!

Oh and one more comment... if you want to help DVD-A format to continue you need to buy them! I hope more people will continue to buy and support it.

It seems to me that the volume is lower on a lot of the DTS and DVD-A titles than on regular CDs.

There are a couple new titles out, tho not many new artists. I don't now what music genres you prefer.
Bon Jovi - The Left Feels Right, Greatest Hits with a Twist
Def Jam - Hot & Wet
Musiq - Soulstar
Neil Young - Re-ac-tor

These were listed in the Sept/Oct issue of DVD Etc. mag and no reviews on them.

Do search of DVD-A on this forum and you will find a wealth of info on the subject. The following threads discuss the DVD-A and SACD and includes links to some online DVD-A sites.

My favorites: Grover Washington's Winelight, Santana's Supernatural and SteelyDan's Everything Must Go.

Like everyone else, I'm waiting for titles to come out. Also waiting for Dual Disc to make it's debut in early 2005 and see where that goes. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that this format will make it

The ones I bought for my TL:
  • Eagles Hotel California
  • Donald Fagen The Nightfly
  • Fran Sinatra, live at the Sands
  • Fourplay - Greatest Hits

All sound great in the car, but then again, so does everything! I wish they had SACD support too.. I have a bunch of those.

http://www.cduniverse.com has a pretty decent selection of DVD-As..

Most modern "remastered" CDs are compressed and "maximized", sort of like having the "loudness" button on an old style receiver pressed in. The highs and lows are boosted, as is the overall amplitude of the signal. This gives these CDs a bright, full, loud sound.

This is fine in a car, but when listened to on decent equipment, it takes the life out of the recording. As time goes by, people will be seeking out the "unremastered" titles that everyone traded in when the remasted discs came out, just to get the real, unaltered sound.

Anyway, most DVD-A's and SACDs do not suffer this abuse, so they may seem "less loud" when compared to a new CD. In fact, it's kinda like the cable station that seems to play the commercials louder than the show - in reality, it's the show being lower than the commercials!

What the heck, I'll list my DVD-A's.

In no particular order:
Tipper- Surrounded
Queen- A night at the Opera, The Game
Elton John- Gooldbye yellow brick road
REM- Best of
Fleetwood Mac- Rumours
Awaken- Electronic music Compilation
Marvin Gaye- For ever yours
Inside the music- New wave
Mike Oldfield- Tubular Bells 2003--This is my favorite DVD-A musicaly so far, although I was always more partial to TB 2.

I'm pretty sure that's it but I feel like I'm leaving somthing out.
