Hi all, any help will be greatly appreciated. Replaced drive with new one. Still have the check disc message. Interesting thing is that the unit has power but will not accept disc like it doesn't have a power to accept it. Any ideas out there? Ribbon to new unit appears to be connected. Thanks

Is this a complete swap or do you need to take parts off your existing box and add to this before installing? Thanks

Did not work 2005 TSX

Followed the original posters directions. I was able to remove two screws on each side of the bracket and remove the unit without removing the bracket. I did remove the small screw on the inside and it was very difficult putting it back together but I think I did it correctly.

Plugged it back in and got

Please wait now downloading software
Please check your disk

Took the disk to Game Stop and the cleaned it. Looks brand new but still doesn't work

Now the radio doesn't work either

Any suggestions other then sending to Alpine?

Can't find the laser!

Tried cleaning again, but no go.
So, I decided to remove the small screw on top of the spring loaded mechanism.
I removed the mechanism.....and I cannot even find the laser to clean it!

I have attached pictures.
Can anyone help?

I found the laser....

And it was not where the OP said his was. It was about another inch or two north-east of where the OP's was.
I took a picture and pointed with my screwdriver. My laser lens was right under my screwdriver and fairly easy to get to to clean. In the 2nd picture, just to the left of the philips head screw underneath.
I wish I would have caught that earlier before I took that screw out and that spring assembly out.....it was a PAIN to get it back into place!

Good news is that I found the laser.
Bad news is that after finally cleaning it, my NAV still does not work.
I guess I am going to give up and just bite the bullet and get a new drive such as the one listed here:

I dont even get this error all I get is blank screen, at night I am able to see a blinking horizontal line on the LCD screen. I tried this cleaning the lense method and didnt work. Once in a year the navi starts working for couple of minutes then stops working for the rest of the year. Any suggestions?

Cleaning with isopropyl worked!

Just wanted to thank everyone ... I ended up cleaning the lens before installing the optical pick-up i ordered ... and it worked!

I just used some 90% isopropyl i picked up from walmart.
I know your suppose to use 99% ... but that all i could find at 10pm.

Hopefully keeps working ... its been 3 days so far.

Hello,
Did you install it? Where in the description does it say it is for an Acura TL?

Also, the price now says it is $27.93 with FREE shipping.

I am not sure if your 2007 TL uses a different part# than my 2005 TL, but this is the equivalent part I am showing to fit the 2005 TL:

2006. From reading around, Alpine updated the loader, which would be this model (from my understanding at least). If it doesn't work, not too terribly concerned about it since it doesn't work as it sits right now and it was only $58. Still better than playing $358.

Something seems missing in the one you ordered....like some parts or electronics are missing from it.

Here is one that specifically says it's for the 2004-06 TL and look at the difference:

I have the exact same problem on my 07 MDX, DVD has a nice deep scratch ring around it on the outter most edge about 5mm in. Did you ever find a fix that worked?

I took the disc out and noticed a faint ring around the outer edge of the disc. removing and replacing the disc seemed to remedy the problem for a short period of time. As of now, removing and replacing the disc does nothing for it, it stays on "disc read error, consult dealership). Nothing I do brings it back to life.

We took it into the dealership for routine maintenance and asked the rep about it. He informed us it was the unit scratching the disc because over time while driving, the bumps in the road make it bounce. You would think that this day in age, they would create a better product for such an expensive vehicle. This is roughly a 50,000 dollar car (MSRP) and having to fix the nav unit after just a few years is unacceptable. They quoted me like a couple thousand dollars to replace it, which is just INSANE!!

After reading the other posts here, I will be trying some of the easier/cheaper ways to remedy it. I did call Alpine today (7/22/13), and it is a flat rate of 358.00, and he also informed me that if there is a ring around the disc, that they will replace the disc as well (not with a new version, same version). It sucks having to deal with this, but it could be a lot worse I guess.

The discs alone cost roughly 99-150.00, so for an extra 200, you get a refurbished unit. I understand electronics go bad over time, but Acura needs to recognize this is not an isolated incident, and put out a recall or at the very least a TSB to remedy this problem. People pay good money for these expensive cars, and should not have to deal with problems like this after only 3-4 years of ownership (and of course right after warranty runs out.)

I will be trying to take the disc to a store and have them buff the disc and I will be trying the ruler trick (only because I don't want to risk losing all capabilities by disconnecting power). If all else fails, Alpine will be making a few bucks. I asked the rep at Alpine, "so lets say you receive the unit and its just a dirty lens causing the error, did I just pay 358.00 dollars for you to clean a lens?" his response was, "well it doesn't sound like that since you have the ring around the disc. It sounds like the mechanism in there is what is causing that." So I hope this post helps somebody else and if anyone has a similar experience, please let me know your experience, what you did, and what worked. Thanks for reading and I will post updates to what I did, what didn't work/what did work. Good luck to all!

I ended up cleaning my lense, it improved but still giving the DVD error after a couple miles of driving. Like "solima4kids", a previous poster with an 07 mdx, I ended up buying the DVD mechanism, I got it from DHGate for $64, http://www.dhgate.com/product/alpine...-2-1|458129260

I would have purchased from aliexpress but apparently you cannot if you live in Washington state.

Hopefully this fixes the error and also the problem with scratched discs.

Does the fan in DVD drive run immediately when you turn your car on? My does not and im not sure if the fan runs at all.

Here's a diriculous question. Has anyone tried a basic CD/DVD lens cleaning kit whereby you put in a cleaning CD with some cleaning fluid on it? I'm getting that stupid DVD Read error and my unit was serviced at Alpine 4 years ago just before the big price increase.

So has anyone had any luck with replacing the drive or the ribbon? I'm ready to order but want to make sure that it worked for those that have already done so. I'd obviously rather buy the ribbon as it's cheaper, but will buy the whole mechanism if that's what I need to do. Thanks

alrighty, I'm spending today trying to fix both the HFL unit (with the bake method) and the DVD read error issue on my '06 TL.

BTW, it took a while to figure out how to remove the carpeting and this video proved very helpful:

I followed the directions to clean the DVD optical lens, except that I didn't bother to disconnect the battery. There was no evidence of any scratching on the disc whatsoever.

I found the lens with some difficulty (it was located in the far right corner like a few posters mentioned, instead of near the center of the unit) and cleaned it, but it looked clean from the beginning and no residue appeared on the q-tip (using 70% isopropyl only).

when I tried to reconnect the back plugs to give it a test (but not reassembling the entire thing to the bracket, etc.), the console now has a new error message. instead of the previous one in which it said "disc reading error, contact dealer) with the other features (e.g. audio) functional, not there is a kind of green screen error that simply says, "check your disc."

I tried to disconnect the reconnect the battery as a reset, but no such luck.

I suspect I'll need the new drive:

http://www.jupoco.com/dv36t02cdv36t0...340-p-147.html

http://www.aliexpress.com/item/DV36T...522433701.html

But is there something I'm missing before I go that route? I don't understand why there's a new error message.

How 'bout it folks?

Is there any significant difference between the error messages that say problem with disc, check dealer (with the other onscreen functions like audio still working) and the "green screen" message that simply says "check your disc" (and none of the other functions working, like the time)? I had the first message until I tried the fix, now I have the second and have lost all functions that go through the NAV screen.

For those of us who weren't helped by cleaning the DVD lens, has anyone successfully replaced the DVD drive with the aliexpress models (which seem to have to be attached to the frame of the drive) to correct either error message?

I can personally vouch that 07-08 drives WILL work on 04-06. I personally installed an 07 TL-S navigation drive onto an 05 TL. No you will not gain any extra features, but it will work exactly like how the 05 should

In regards to the people who posted about swapping the dvd mechanism, that's very interesting. However it seems like there is a huge lack of info on it. When/if my drive ever becomes that bad I will try to replace the drive myself and post some pics in here, because it seems like the ppl/person who did this alrdy doesnt want to help ppl out.

SUCCESS with unit from Aliexpress!

About 2 weeks ago, I ordered part #DV36T02C from Aliexpress for my 2004 TL.
See this one for example:
http://www.aliexpress.com/item/DV36T...522433701.html

Sellers change from day to day on this unit, but my total price was about $168 delivered to me.

Within 2 weeks it arrived to me.
I changed out the unit this morning and everything is working GREAT!
The hardest part was removing the small ribbon cable from the old unit and re-installing it on the new unit.
You better have decent eyesight and not huge hands if you want to tackle this job.
Removal of 4 screws on each corner and 1 ribbon cable on the bottom side was all that was needed. VERY tricky removing/re-installing the ribbon cable! I pointed to the ribbon connector with my screwdriver in the picture.

I have attached pictures of the packaging it came in and a comparison of my old unit to the new one. The only difference I could see is my old one had another silver mechanism arm on the top right section that the new one lacked and that one IC chip on the new one was different than the old one.

I SUGGEST EVERYONE GIVE A BIG F-YOU TO ALPINE FOR RAISING THEIR PRICE OVER 100%+ (to nearly $400) AND GET THESE FROM ALIEXPRESS INSTEAD FOR WELL UNDER $200!

thanks for the update. can you post the link to the replacement that you bought. I have an 06 TL, but as I recall the newer DVDs are cheaper than the ones for the older models. so if it works, getting the new one seems to make the most sense.

Got my unit "dv36m110" from DHGate and swapped it out! Took about 45mins. Works great so far. I took detailed pictures of the process and will post a DIY when I get a chance. Like someone said above, the hardest part is putting the small ribbon back in and pressing the clips inward on the side. Another tricky part was taking the front face off then having to unscrew a small PCB board to access one screw. Everything else was pretty straight forward, just keep track of where all the screws go.

Been working good so far but i've only tested it for about 10mins. Hope it lasts!

I would have purchased from aliexpress but apparently you cannot if you live in Washington state.
