Dice Ipod (text display) installed in Canadian TL!!

Hello All,

Received my Dice R4 unit in the mail yesterday, (ordered from Cardomain a couple of weeks ago) and installed it today. It's pretty sweet! I know I've asked this question before and I recall seeing someone else ask but just to let you Canadian TL'ers know, you get the text! I have an 06 w/Nav and no XM, but if you set the DIP switches to SAT instead of CDC, the head unit recognizes it and brings up the XM screen! You also get the song title on display above the head unit.

Thanks to all those who posted install instructions.

I'll post pics of screen if anyone is interested...

I always thought the Canadian TL system was similar (if not identical) to their US counterparts. I have yet to see something (aftermarket electronic-wise) that works only for the US model and not the Canadian model.

Thanks for the confirmation.

Hi Datmrman,

The head unit in the Canadian TL, for 06 and earlier atleast, does not have an 'XM' button. I didn't think I would be able to bring up the XM screen to get the text but decided to take the leap anyway... glad I did.

The DICE kit provides TEXT on all 2005 and newer Honda/Acura. And some 2003 and newer models. It's the same radio that the U.S. spec models have. It's just that XM claims it doesn't work in Canada so Honda can't offer XM. The input is still there.

FYI... XM works in Canada. And sometimes Alaska... weird.

The Canadian model doesn't have an XM button and so far the only way I can get to the XM screen is by pressing the 'Mode' button on the steering wheel and cycling through FM1, FM2, AM, until it hits XM. I was hoping that I would just be able to hold down the CD/DVD button but no luck there. Does anybody know of any other way to get to the XM screen? Thanks in advance.

I also forgot to mention for the other Canadian TL'ers out there, I think you could get away with the R3 kit if you have an 06 or older. We have a free port back there so no need for the 'Y' cable.

It will most likely work on the non Navi TL since you would hook it up in CDC mode. In CDC mode it basically treats your IPOD as a CD changer and give you the ability to control your ipod through the head unit and steering wheel controls. I tried it on my car in CDC mode and had no problems. I hooked it up in XM mode to take advantage of text capability. You won't get text in CDC mode but you get the benefit of controlling your ipod and the better sound quality.

Hey just a question for you, kinda related to this, i've got an 06 and from canada so you know that I don't have an xm button but you said you were able to bring up the xm screen on the head unit? Is this with the dip switches on the dice unit you picked up or on the factory unit? I've never taken my car apart so i'm not sure, any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

Hey All - I've been out of the loop for tooooo long it seems. Lotsa iPod developments.

Anyone know about the 2004 TL w/NAVI in Canada?? The thread seems to imply that it will work but (a) which DICE version and (b) will it really? It would be great if someone out there had it going already with a 2004 Canadian NAVI

TIA

Yup, if your TL is 04-08 you'll get text display just fine. Does not matter if it's a US or Canadian model either.

I don't understand, were you getting reduced sound quality in XM mode compared to CDC mode??

You flip the DIP switches on the DICE kit to XM mode and you'll use your steering wheel's Mode key to active it! You'll be good to go with text!

Yea, it rly rly will work. There's another thread in this forum with a Canadian TL with pics of it working.

There's little difference in a US and a CAN model Honda car. It's just the buttons are a little different.

Quasi, the DIP switches that I was referring to are on the DICE unit. You can set up the DICE unit to be recognized by your head unit as either an XM module or a CD changer. If you set the DICE module up to be recognized as a CD changer, you access it in your car by pressing the CD/DVD button. You will then see the screen that shows disc number, track number, etc.

Now if you set up your DICE module to be recognized as an XM module, then you access the unit by pressing the 'MODE' button on your steering wheel until it the head unit switches to XM. The XM mode is available in the head unit, there just wasn't a way to access it since there wasn't a button for it, or an XM module attached to your car. Hope this helps.

I'll try to get some pics up.

Hi Nick,

When I said 'better sound quality' I was comparing it to FM transmitter or the awesome tape deck adapter.

Thanks for the info, I would like to know more since I want xm on my head unit in my car right now, I have an aftermarket in the glove box but it sounds like crap, always cutting out and static all the time so yeah, pics would be great of your set-up CCTL, and by the way, which part of canada are you in? I'm from Alberta, thanks again

Oh yes, the sound quality is much much improved over a FM or tape adapter. It's a true line-in, so there's no down-sampling.

Unless your antenna placment is poor, I seriously doubt an intergrated XM kit is going to have any better reception than the external one.

Quasi, how is your XM unit hooked up to your car now, FM transmitter? I'm going to guess that your XM module transmits signals to your head unit through some built in FM transmitter. If this is the case you will get static like the rest of us who have tried the FM transmitters.

The Dice module actually has an AUX-in jack that will allow you to hook up any other device that has an output (e.g. other non Apple MP3 players, dvd player, etc) and acts as a simple input option. You should be able to hook up your XM unit to this line to eliminate the need of the FM transmitter and basically allow you to hook up the XM unit directly to your head unit. You won't be able to control the XM through the controls on the head unit but you probably already know that.

There are other options for AUX-IN inputs too, I think some other ppl on this board rigged their own. The Dice unit gives best of both worlds, IPOD and Aux-in in one simple plug and play solution.

I'll try to put up some pics tonight. BTW, I'm from Toronto, home of the crappy Toronto Maple Leafs... Let's go Raptors!

Here are the pictures of the setup...

Nav screen with song titles.

Pulled cables under centre console, drilled hole in plastic cap and inserted a rubber grommet. I installed an extra mini stereo cable to extend the aux port, this way I can hide the Dice module under the head unit.

Ipod attached to docking cable as well as the extra stereo jack for other devices.

Precision needed for 04 Canadian non-navi TL

Nick,

First of all thanks for supporting us, TL users, on this forum.

I'm ready to make the move and integrate my Ipod in my TL (04 Canadian non-navi).

If I understand well I need the R4 right?

Will I get text display on the non-navi head unit (via the steering wheel mode button)?

If not, I'll set the R4 in CD mode and will be able to access both via steering and head unit buttons.

Thanks.

Carl

Oh no worries. Knowledge is king, right?

Since you don't have Navi or XM, you only need the R3 kit actually.
You'll get text display and yes you'll active it with the Mode key on the steering-wheel.

It works fine with them. They'll remain locked for music selection like all the new iPod's. The Touch will charge normally, while the iPhone will charge very slowly.

Thanks for your input Nick .

I'll make the move and let everybody know how it works.

hey guys .... sorry to hijack this thread but my idea might interest all of us. It pertains to Sirius, without the DICE adapter.

Do you think it's possible to hook in the HONSC1 Sirius kit to the empty port on the back of the radio and then use the mode button on the steering wheel to cycle through and still find the XM mode and hopefully be listening to Sirius? Intention being to save us from having to source a US stereo to get Sirius integration on TL's that did not ship with a satellite option?
