So I am relatively new to this forum and car audio as a whole but I want to have a nice system in my 2004 TL. I want to replace everything. Head unit, door speakers, tweeters, and the rear speakers and sub-woofer. I just need help deciding what brand I should go with for certain speakers because I do want to have a high end system. I am willing to spend ($1000+) for everything But not trying to spend thousand and thousands of dollars. If that makes sense. I have a reasonable budget.

Another question. When I went to buy a new head unit I was talking to Geek squad, yes judge me, and they were telling me that in order to replace the head unit, you have to get a certain code from the dealer in order to have use of the radio. I don't know if this is a common occurrence or if its just me so any help here would be helpful.

Also with the headunit I was going with a 7" JVC CD/DVD - Built-In Bluetooth - In-Dash A/V Receiver.

As far as mounting harness goes, is there a mounting kit for the 3rd generation TL? or will I have to find an alternative. Again, really new at this and just need some help.

Ultimately, I will be doing a lot of research and will use the forums to help me get the best speakers and everything for this build. Any help is great. Let me know what is good and what I should avoid. any response is appreciated!

 

You cannot really put together a high end system for $1K. Is there a reason why you want to replace the HU? its the only piece worth saving and integration is complicated both electronically and cosmetically

 

Just curious about your build, i have an 2008, with the navigation the screen is shot and I'm considering changing the whole thing as well. I took the car to car tronics they said they won't touch it because it to compacted

 

If you're going for the full replacement package, you might want to consider the Pioneer AVH-4100NEX with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Yes, it's double the price, but if you're gonna keep the TL for a few years, you'll that having your phone as a working component of your sound system is HUGE plus. I helped a friend install this in his G35 and boy was I jealous. If I didnt already have a Grom setup with all the cables nicely hidden, i'd probably just buy the HU and keep the rest of the system

You're not going to get audiophile quality for that but you should be able to put together a decent system for that budget. That JVC head isn't really "high end" (although that is a rather arbitrary definition in reality) but I once installed a JVC head in my mommies car and was pleasantly surprised at the performance for the price point. You could certainly do worse.

The nice thing about building your own modular system is that you can go about it in stages and can replace components as you feel they should or could be improved.

Just throwing a swag: if you like that JVC head, add some Infinity kappa components, and say a Fosgate amp and youll be in the $1500-$1800 range all in.

IMO that could be a good baller on a budget system.

Check out crutchfield for the whosywhatsits of harnesses and mounting adapters and shop the web for good deals. EBay if you don't mind grey market or "fell off the back of the truck" parts.

You can get close to high end for 1K if you keep the OEM HU, do the work yourself and plan your purchases.
