Cheapest 2-way Remote Start for a 6mt TL-S

Been looking at the Viper Responder One (their entry level system @ $300) but haven't seen it for sale too many places.

Ideally I want a system that doesn't require a full on keyfob, and I could care less about an alarm, I just want the car to turn on when it's freezing and me to know that it's on. I like the Viper because it's just a 1 button keyfob which means I can keep my key for everything else.

Anyone have any recommendations for something that fits that criteria and will work with a 6MT 3G TL-S?

Thanks

i know that most dei alarms do have a:

remote start activation input wire...blue - white stripe...i do believe it is a negative pulse...

and what you can do with that is tag a door lock wire that sees a negative pulse...

and set the remote start to respond to remote start with your desiered number of pulse..and voila...

the remote start would be activated by tapping the unlock on your factory keyfob 3 times...

I don't want to use the factory keyfob because at work it isn't going to reach my car from the building. I just want to try and avoid one of the giant keyfobs that has 5 buttons, the LCD screen, etc. Plus I like the idea of the two-way since it will give me feedback on if it actually worked or not.

It looks like the Viper system just has an LED/beep when it confirms the car started and thats plenty. Although I'm wondering how cheap it will actually be since it looks like the unit is $300 and it requires a $100 adapter according to their configuration site.

Anybody here do a remote start for under ~$300 installed? Ugly keyfob or not?

Why not just get a one way..saves a ton of money and the range is fantastic. Really I understand you want to know if the car started but the the strength of the signal on some of these remote starters is appalling. I'm about to pick up a one way Viper 5101 SuperCode from best buy for 200 installed for my Mother. Few of my friends have them and say it's really good so I'll go with their word. Says it's got a 2000 foot range so that's plenty. It does have a big FOB but oh well.

Called around today, Best Buy won't even touch manual transmissions, and 2 other shops that use cheaper systems won't do it because the systems aren't designed to have the MT lockout so they don't want the liability of you launching your car. Sounds like I'm looking at around $400 installed for a Viper 5301, since no one local carries the lower end system.

I always get a kick out of this. why would you want the cheapest thing possible when you are tapping into the main ignition, starter, and databus circuits of your almost $40k car? I would want something reliable from someone who knows what the hell they are doing.

I would find a shop you feel comfortable with that sells a system you like and it likely will be more than $300.

dont cheap out on your remote starter!!!! totally agree with Diamondjoe, especially when you are dealing with bypassing the immobilizer you want it to be as reliable as possible.

Just find a smaller local joint to install it. I just picked up the Viper 5501 and DEI xk01 interface module for like 250 bucks on Amazon.

The install should be a couple hundred bucks.

And the key fob that comes with the remote start is the same size as the OEM one.

Buy a viper, clifford, or python off the internet and install it yourself. There's a good DIY:

Viper DIY.

Save yourself about $300-$400.

u could look online and try to get a older viper 791xv which has 1/4 mile range and is 2 way. which i had on my mazdaspeed. i just bypass the clutch and everything no pain. I installed it myself since thats part of what i do and picked the alarm up at cost for about $110

Who said I didn't want something reliable and safe? My question was because many systems only cost $150 (like people mentioned) but DON'T work properly with a M/T car.

Thats why I wanted to know what a low cost option was that was M/T friendly.

It sounds like $400 is my bottom # as I mentioned, and it sounds like unless I go with an older system or DIY thats probably in the right ballpark. I don't want to skimp on it, I just don't want to pay $750 for a high end alarm and then find out there was a basic unit that would do it for less. That low end viper seems like it's it, but I haven't found anywhere that carries it or installs it.

Just put a Viper 5901 in my TL about a month ago with the DIY guide on this forum as posted above. Couldnt be happier. Insane range and know when its running. Only have to tap one wire to get the xpresskit interface to lock/unlock your doors and disable the OEM alarm when starting. Very easy. Did it all under $250. Ebay baby!

If you truly want to do it right for a MT car, look into the Compustar units. Just as reliable as DEI but have units specifically built for MT transmissions. Last I remember about 2 years ago, I paid $250 for the unit on Ebay and $150 for shop to install. I'm sure its a bit cheaper now.

We sell Compustars and they are ROCK SOLID. I like them a lot better than the DEI offerings (I used to work for a DEI dealer). The 1BAM900SH is a cool unit if you just want a basic starter. It is actually a 1BAM with better range (2500' vs 800') for about $50 more. All of the Compustars work w/ a manual trans. It is in the brain for the unit. You can add on whichever transmitter you want. Just decide alarm or no then pick 1 way or 2 way, then how much range you want.

Thanks - hadn't seen those units, good info!

I'll need to see if theres any other shops around me that do those units, though it still seems even for $250+$150 install the $400 point is where it's gonna end up.

Now only if I hadn't just blown all my money on Xmas presents! I never thought I would have *wished* for 30 degree weather before it's been so cold!

The DEI (Clifford, Python, Viper) units are designed to work with M/T. I have the Clifford 50.7 on my 04 6MT, works great!

You can find many of the alarm manuals to download here

have to agree compustar would be your best bet if you have a MT. and dont get the alarmed ones, they are REALLY annoying. the difference between the compustar and the other brands is you wont need to do a stupid procedure with the remote,e-brake,brake. all you have to do is set the park brake with your foot on the brake pedal and take the key out. the car will stay running and as soon as all the doors close, the engine shuts off by itself.

if you want the install to be alot easier, use the idatallink ADS AL-CA bypass module. it will give you signals for tach, hood latch,e-brake,door pin and do door locks and trunk all with just the data wire. so you save alot of time by having to wire only 1 wire to the car to get all those things. and from the compustar to the idatalink its also only 1 RS-232 wire. The idatalink also intergrates with the OEM alarm. so wehn you lock your doors with your remote starter, the OEM alarm gets armed as well.

when i did my car it was my very first time and it took me about 6 hours to do, its not as bad as everyone says.

here's a link to compustars's parent company, there are a compustars that get rebranded into other brands but they are still the same units with different remotes.
http://www.firstechllc.com/

there is also a link for idatalink on this site. take a look and see what fits your needs best. good luck!!
