Center Speaker/Tweeter replacement w/crossover ?

1st post, just got me an 06 TL with ELS system last week. I've read thru numerous threads about speaker replacement but one thing i haven't been able to clarify is if when replacing the center speaker with a component speaker, is a crossover needed? Pretty sure i read that with the tweeters it is since they're wired with the door speakers, but would tweeters with built in crossovers work? Basically, I'm looking for simple plug n play options for the dash to get better highs.

Getting a tweeter to play nicely in the center dash is going to be a lot harder than getting a wide band 3" speaker to mate with existing tweeters. It's not impossible but if you want plug and play go with a more traditional replacement. There are a lot of options out there for wide band speakers that will play into the 16 - 20 khz range pretty well that you won't need a tweeter in that location to achieve the highs you're looking for.

Unless you are playing real 6-channel DVD-As you might skip updating the center channel speaker. For regular 2 channel stuff its not really used in the same way as 6 channel. The OE tweeters have a small capacitor bonded to them so you will need a crossover for replacement tweeters. Most will come with whatever you need. For the center channel if you go with a 2way it shouldn't need a crossover as most have a capacitor (and maybe a coil) built into them for their tweeter. I also seem to remember that the HU center channel output rolls off around 300hz but can't seem to find any old posts to prove it.

The tweeters and center channel driver I went with are not anything you'd find available anymore but the info in the thread I link below should still be relevant for an 06 as I don't think there were any significant changes from my 05
