Rough procedure of what the kind lady (the one whom speaks to us) and I were doing.
Note, "CMD" will mean holding onto the 'talk' button and saying a command.

CMD - "Phone setup"
CMD - "Pair"
[the kind lady says something about safety and being stopped.]
[the kind lady then searches for a mobile phone]
[at this point the HFL is in discovery mode and is also searching for your phone]
Go into your phone's bluetooth options.
Make sure your mobile phone is in discovery mode.
At the same time, search for other bluetooth devices.
[you should find Hands Free Link quickly].
Click to connect to HFL from your mobile phone.
[the kind lady will now ask for a password].
CMD - [say any 4 numbers you want, such as: 0000 or 1234].
[the kind lady will now ask if you want to confirm that password].
Now, go to your phone and when prompted enter the same number.
[you should be paired at this point]
[the kind lady will now ask you to name your mobile phone]
CMD - [say any name you wish to recognize the mobile you have just paired].

Goodluck.

I'm not sure if that's the proper method but it's what I did when I first got my TL.
I've used that very method on various phones such as: Nokia 8800, Nokia N97, Nokia E72, Nokia N8 // Sony Ericsson 580i // LG Rumor // iPhone 1G, iPhone 3G, iPhone 3G-S, iPhone 4
It worked on all TLs and even the 2010 MDX. So it should work for you too.

FWIW, I've found when pairing Bluetooth devices that I get the best results when I wait to activate the phone's Bluetooth until after I've put the other device in pairing mode. That is, in the case of the TL's HFL, I don't activate the phone's Bluetooth discovery mode until after the HFL lady says the system is searching for a mobile phone.

May not be strictly necessary, but once or twice I've had problems pairing things and it seemed to work best when I did it this way, so that's what I do.
