Backup camera installed on '05 Navi

I have a 2005 TL with Navi and i always like the back up camera feature on the newer model.

I am sure a backup camera can be installed on the existing navi. I wonder is it something i can DIY (in term of technical difficulty and time) vs. asking a professional to do it (quoted $500)

I searched the forum and didn't really find anything. Please advise and Thanks.

i found this on youtube and it looks very complicated

you will need a module that will intercept the navi, most common ones are Nav2go, Dom's unit, etc.

these units have a connection for the back up camera and splices into the nav.

Honestly, there is probably not a good reason to install a back up cam in your car.
you've been turning your head and looking back just fine....

by adding a back up cam this way, you wont have all the cool things a factory back up cam will have....
no noises, no colored lines, no anything...
and in the end, it'll probably be more of a novelty than anything useful..

Even though I can't contribute to the question here, I can say backup cams are incredibly useful. When I backup in a car without one I am actually hesitant to start moving. Not because I'm a pussy or something, but because there can be anything right behind the vehicle and you would never know. I think this mentality came to me more after having children. Besides the huge safety factor, it's also priceless when backing up and seeing how close you are to the vehicle or object behind you. I personally will never own another car without one.
If you're able to get one for your TL without a doubt do it!

I have no problem turning my head around and neither do i have problem parking or backing up. It's a plus and very useful feature to have as a backup plan in case something is behind. Esp there are children in the family and everything combined.

I still use old fashion looking behind me but like every else stated my son love to run around the drive way when I got home and that camera is a help also when I need to see how much distance I have left before hitting the wall once the car completely straight out. I don't see how that distance marker helps, you just use it to check what hidden behind not depend on it.

I find my backup camera helpful, but I definitely would not install one if it wasn't included already.

A back up camera is very useful depending where you live.
If you frequent or live in a city where parallel parking is a standard, it really helps to see how much space is left to back up. The other reason is also some people have dark tints on the rear, in dimly light places at night, looking back there is not so great. For me, those are the two times I gotta say, I could really use one and they aren't so uncommon.
