auxiliary cable jack question

i have an 07 tl and my auxiliary cable jack for the ipod is inside the arm rest console at the bottom
currently to use my ipod i let the wire run from inside there to where the cupholders are and i slam the arm rest console on the wire because i did not find any other place to let the wire through so now after a while my wire is goin bad because it is bein squished all the time
so my question is..is there any other way to run the wire through without havin to squish it
also is there any way to control the ipod using the steering wheel without buying any accessories

there is a hole in the back of the upper tray to run the wire through. In the front left of the upper tray there is a little groove that the wire fits into and will allow the armrest to close...
