Question Anybody in here have tried this custom trunk box?

I found this on ebay. I wanted to know has anyone purchased it and installed it in their car. Looks nice and clean. They said that they will make the box based on which sub you will be using. Also you can get the black vinyl finish or matching carpet of your vehicle. Check it out:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Custo...9#ht_500wt_956
I'd post pics but for some reason it wouldn't let me.

Hey Hoop! That looks so good. Is that a 10 or 12 inch sub?

They say is recommended not to mount upside down , I want as much trunk space as possible , so I will have to cross that bridge when I come to it . So far it's working great !

Wait so the enclosure cost 2x the price of the sub? I don't know how much that sub costs, but hopefully not more than $200. I'm not hating, it looks clean, but wow. And also, that amp is dying a slow death. The heatsink is on top of the amp for a reason.

I'd pay $150. But if I did pay that much, I'd put a much, much better sub in it.

Enclosure is definitely expensive... but its all custom.. which is why. But once you make a mold.. cranking out more enclosures is relatively easy and definitely not $400 worth. I definitely love the custom sub box though and would think about buying it too.

That enclosure is covered in vinyl and has the type-S emblem. This:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Custo...item45fa45e597

is the plain carpet covered enclosure. It's still $300 but that is the going price for a custom enclosure.

If you have never worked with fiberglass, then these things are a bargian if you want a side enclosure (the $300 one). Sure, it is not a 1 hour MDF box, but it is also not a 1 hour MDF box. I did one myself at a cost of about $80 in materials (without finish) with a weeks worth of smell in my garage, a month's worth of smell in my car and a mess that took me hours to clean up. I bought my next two, but this is not a "hobby" for the weak wallet.

Those things can take 1200W from a pretty solid sub and keep on ticking.

Many, many amps can be mounted any which way. Read the manual for your amp.

3-400 for a fiberglass enclosure is not bad, thats pretty much a regular price for something like that. you want a 150 dollar box you better expect a rectangle shaped mdf box

Yeah, that'd be a better option. Spend the extra money on better amps and/or subs. Or find a friend who can do the work for you. It just seems a high price to pay for that. Anyhow, the amp is going to die. Soundstream has a series that mounts vertically, maybe Class-D amps can be mounted upside down. But yeah, heat rises.

I think its a little high, but quite a bit cheaper than the JL stealth boxes I have seen, $600 or so.

If having the heatsink up or down makes or break the amp, the sink is just too small usually meaning a bad quality product or the manufacturer just doesn't want to take any risks with a minimal design. When it comes to heatsinks, bigger Is better.

Considering the only gain is from the heat going up elevating the ambiant temp of the amp a few degrees and the amp being able to handle over 210°F means the carpet in the trunk should melt or catch fire before the amp goes.

Thats with a suitably sized sink of course.

Just my

Its also moving heat from locations that dont need the extra heating. Yeah any amp will handle some high temps but having the heat transfer to areas up and away from other components is the main way of handling it.

Same principle applies to CPU's, heat up and away or pulled off and away. Like in desktops where the CPU sits sideways, but the induction fan is always pulling from the bottom, up and out.

Heat is an issue with most entry-level amps. That amp was likely no risk to last 10+ years or anything anyway. Just use it how you want and get another one (a better one maybe) when it dies or the distortion gets too much to handle.

SOOO TRUE! Working w/fiberglass is no joke! I easily spent over $80 on my corner trunk enclosure and not to mention days and days of layering and finishing. It was well worth it but if you don't have the area, patience, and time invest in this one!
