Aftermarket Stereo Upgrade Help?
Hey everyone, I'm a new member to these forums but have been browsing them ever since I got my 3G TL back in January. Normally my questions are answered by browsing here or a quick couple google searches, but I need help with a specific issue.
I want to put two 12's in my TL (6sp w/navi), and after doing some research, it has become evident to me that it's not that simple. I'm a newbie to this to bear with me. I have two Rockford Fosgate P3D2-12 Punch P3 DVC 2 Ohm 12-Inch's in a ported enclosure that will be powered by a Hifonics ZRX1200.1D Zeus Amplifier. Now, I plan on keeping the stock head unit, and this means I'll need a Line Out Converter. Do you guys recommend any specific ones? Some say you don't need an LOC if your amp has speaker level input, but others say it's still necessary. And what gauge wiring should I use? I was thinking 12-14 gauge. I also read about some type of fuse to prevent the battery from draining? Like I said, I'm relatively new to this... Help would be appreciated.
Thanks!

You can use a LOC or high level inputs on an amp if you like. This will work but the output for the subwoofer from the OEM amp is not flat or clean. I tried this and while I was happy with the result for a time switching to the preamp signal was like night and day in terms of quality and output (especially down low). The one other consideration for taking the preamp signal is that this is a low level signal (<0.9v) which would become prone to interference along the way to your amplifier unless you either boosted the signal near the HU with a line driver or connected a line driver (such as the JL CL-RLC
which can utilize the differential balanced signal our HU sends. Some amplifiers have inputs that can make use of this noise cancelling type of signal (such as my JL HD900/5) but some do not and it appears your Zeus amp does not. The JL line driver is around 60 bucks.
You could also try using the preamp signal and keeping it away from power lines in the car but this would only potentially work for the sub channel as most of the noise from the interference will only be audible in the upper frequencies anyway.
Hope it helps.
