Aftermarket Navi mounting advice.

Hey guys, I have an '07 with 85,000 on the clock, and the Navi is dying. I've cleaned the disc, which helped for a while, but now it just says "see dealer". I've looked into solutions, but honestly, I'm asking myself why even bother with the stock crappy navigation? Why not get a Garmin for $187 with a 7" screen? Of course I'll have to find a way to mount it nicely, but the Garmin navigation is lightyears ahead of Acura's.

So, here's the one I'm looking at...

Amazon.com : Garmin nĂ¼vi 2757LM 7-Inch Portable Vehicle GPS with Lifetime Maps : Commercial Trucking Gps Units : GPS & Navigation Amazon.com : Garmin nĂ¼vi 2757LM 7-Inch Portable Vehicle GPS with Lifetime Maps : Commercial Trucking Gps Units : GPS & Navigation

My only questions are; do you have something similar, and if so, how did you mount it?

Am I the only one that wants to use an aftermarket system?

You're not crazy. I posted a lot about it in this thread along with my proclip mount.

https://acurazine.com/forums/audio-b...k-used-934268/

Proclip is light years ahead of any other mount it's worth the price

I also tried out about three different sizes (5, 6, 7") and anything more than 5 was way too big. I did lots and lots of research on the best ones out there so feel free to ask

The one you posted is so so. My main criteria was voice command and lifetime HD traffic (which is different and better than regular traffic)

Dude, you're awesome!

Thing is, I want to mount it right where the current navi screen is, like on top of it. I only listen to a few channels on XM, and I can change those from the steering wheel. So I'm wanting to somehow just lay it over the current screen to it doesn't get in the way of my vents or anything.

I wouldn't be using it for traffic, or voice command. I'm more interested in super clear, easy to read graphics, and updates.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

if you want it to go where the current navi screen is, your best bet is a cd player mount. i tried one out for my phone a few times but returned it because it covered the screen too much and i use the screen for audio. if you can find a sturdy gps mount for the cd player slot, that will fit the location you want. you may have to modify the mount to make sure it is sturdy though!

tom tom has some great graphics (better than garmin) but in all my researching and what i wanted, garmin was above and beyond what tom tom offered. make sure whatever you get it includes lifetime map updates

I feel like a CD player slot mount might be not sturdy enough as you pointed out.
Second your opinion about Tom Tom. It's a dead company to me, they sat on their laurels for a while when GPS were the new things and now their products just feel "ancient" compared to other company offerings.

Regarding putting it in front of the navi, would you considering something such as a universal gooseneck holder? It's not as aesthetically pleasing as a ProClip but in that way you could position it wherever you want and move it out of the way if necessary.

I want to stick it to the screen with something that won't damage the screen. Just put it right on top. I'd use 2-sided tape if I could, but I don't want to damage the car. I want it as flat against the screen as possible though.

So, Garmin is the way to go. Got it. I never buy from Best Buy, but I think I'll stop by there and check them out to see which one will fit best in that area.

After looking at it again, if I got a big enough display, it would be fine by the passenger's knee. As long as I could face it towards me, that would be great. I don't want it in front of my face, and I don't want to damage the OEM navi screen.

Proclip has a mounting solution right by the passenger knee

Yup, just bought one! I'll update the thread when I get my Garmin 2589 installed properly.

Got my Navi installed, thanks in large part to Dave (sockr1). I ended up with the Garmin 2589 and the ProClip, both of which are awesome. I ran the power cord from the arm-rest accessory power under the console. I may move the mounting bracket over just a bit so I to tap the Navi when I put the car in park, but it's damn near perfect where it is.

Looks sweet! Used to have a phone mount in a similar location and it was too in the way for my guests (they knocked it a bit sometimes) or it looked like I was reaching for their thighs.

I hear you, definitely not a location I'd choose if I had passengers. This is our third car, my daily driver, and there is almost no one ever in the car except me. The only time the Navi is in the car is when I'm going on on a trip for work, so it works out great in this location.

Oh you misunderstood me! Me blindly reaching for my phone mount was the perfect excuse for my wandering hand.

It's a shame there's no good/ideal location for a third party navi in the TL, while the center stack isn't too crowded, everything on it is necessary. The storage cubicles would be good if they weren't hiding behind the shifter.

Why not just attach it to your windshield, and then run the cables nice and discreetly behind your dash? Plenty of mounts that will stick to your windshield.

Looks great and glad it all worked out!! So many better features in the garmin and sounds like you have the perfect application for it

I think the radio area is a perfect place to mount it actually, I mean, who uses a cassette, or even a CD anymore? I'm going to look into cassette and CD mounts to see if there might be something better out there. I'd like to have it either closer to the center, or further away. For now I think I'm going to move it further away.

I'm a short guy, and don't like anything in my field of view when I'm driving.

I do! DVDA is great, but that will change whenever I pony up for a tablet mod.
