2013 Navi DVD: Yay or Nay?

Just saw the $99 for the 2013 DVD here:

http://www.navigation.com/is-bin/INT...CU-EM1-FS-0313

Is it worth upgrading? Mine is still from 2004.

Ask the following: how much do I use the Navi? If a lot, $99 is cheap for an upgraded disc considering yours is nearly 10 years old. I'd do it. If you bought one last year, the upgrade probably wouldn't be worth it.

I've updated our '04 4x with 2011 the latest. It has the daylight savings time update, but the route making is just as bad as in '04. Most routes still utilize the major highway system causing longer times as well as additional mileage, far from the quality of an aftermarket GPS.

i just bought this yesterday, I was still running the original from 2008. Figured it was worth 100 bucks every 5 years haha. Disc shipped and will be arriving on Monday. Only downside is that I lose my navi hack start up screen image

At most, I'd buy a replacement every 3 or 4 years.

I've found that the TL Navi gives earlier turn instructions and finds more efficient "direct" routes around SoCal than our Garmin aftermarket.
The Navi has routing options to "minimize highways" (as well as "minimize toll roads"), which I use when the highways are too congested.

I succumbed and decided to buy it since I find myself using the GPS often. I just don't want it to be a downgrade in terms of route planning (I don't have issues with the 04 disc route planning).

Hopefully, house numbers for certain streets will be fixed so it doesn't take me to the right block, but the wrong house...

I ordered this for my 08 TL. I'll let you guys know how it is. There have been a lot of messed up highway directions when driving around the DC area probably due to all the never ending construction Often times when the highway forks in 2 directions, the navi will have an arrow pointing to go left to stay on 95 when in real life you need to stay right. That can own you if you're not paying attention

I have a 2011 disc, there's a few new roads being built by me, it was kinda weird driving through the void on the map for a few miles lol. For now it'll do, maybe in a few years or when somebody figures out how to burn them I'll get one. If all else fails damn near every phone has nav built in.

i got my 2013 update disc this past Saturday, and even thought I lost my navi hack image, the new navigation includes roads I previously couldn't see. To me it was worth $100 to update my original 2008 navigation database. Shipping was pretty fast (few days to go across the nation)

When you replace the disk, do you retain your previous destinations?

NAV display

I still have the original NAV disc on my 05 TL. Does the 2013 version make the NAV display any different or does it just add more streets?

It's added a lot more POI's (Points Of Interest). The look of the Nav will be the same but more expanded application.

To add to Steven Bell's answer, newer discs also contain software updates and patches which correct DST (after 2008) and speed up the Navi routing and operation.

Nope, or at least not for me.

I just got my disc yesterday and tested it out today.

^What these guys are saying is true for me as well. I notice more POIs (and accurate ones, especially gas stations), and more street markings. I haven't tested out a few locations that didn't exist in 2004 (they're quite far away), but I already feel good about this purchase. Although I can't say how it compares to the 2012 disc, I definitely suggest it to those who haven't upgraded in a long time. Deal ends tomorrow!

When I upgraded to 2013 White disk, all my previous destinations remained there. That was also the case with my previous 2 upgrades. The only thing I lost was a custom splash screen, but that was easily fixed in a few minutes.
BTW, my 2011 White disk is listed for sale in the Black Market section if anyone is interested.

can you change the splash screen on the new one? I had it on my 2008 version but didn't think you could do it on new versions. Details?

you would have to copy your current navi disc, change some files, and burn it on another disc-

give this thread a peak,

That process in the above link should work fine. Personally I didn't mess with the OpeningBase.bmp file at all, just Opening1.bmp.

I am considering this because I am a recent victim of the "error reading dvd". I wonder if this would help, since my disk is v3.40 or something like that.

What, more specifically, are you talking about when you say "Splash Screen"?

Where can you change the Splash Screen? This should be interesting-I just usually plug in the disc and just keep on going!

you just follow the directions up above in those links. i did this on my 2008 nav dvd and basically it allows you to put up a custom screen when you turn on the car. it goes away when the OK button comes on. it's just on for a little bit but it always makes my passengers be like "wait what was that?!" 5 second cool factor haha

Now that some people have new 2013 disks, is anyone looking to make a few bucks selling the old orange disk to an fellow a'ziner . Alot has changed locally to me since 04 and anything newer than 2010 would be a major upgrade.

$99 is definitely the right price if your car is an '04/5/6 and are still using the original disk that came with the car when it was new. I've swapped my original '04 disk for the 2010 and then the 2012. The only improvements as far as I can tell are new streets, points of interest, and more accurate listings of the nearest 'whatever'. The 2012 disk still shows a Popeye's Fried Chicken in Norwood, NJ that's been closed for almost 5 years now. Routing still sucks (at least up to the 2012 disk) as this fuckin thing STILL likes to randomly take me around in circles, blocks or miles unnecessarily out of the way, and on double loop da loops.

As I've stated in previous threads, those in the NYC/NJ area will understand what I mean when I say I'm coming down the Palisades Pkwy to a designated location in NJ. This crazy mixed up thing tells me to get on 95 NORTH which means going over the GW Bridge (a $13 toll), go onto 9A Riverside Drive, turn around and come back over the bridge. And it doesn't matter whether I have it set to Direct Route, Easy Route, Minimize, Maximize, etc. WTF is wrong with this picture????

My DVD unit was serviced and reconditioned at Alpine 2½ years ago. Think that made a difference?

Unless they finally straighten out the routing, upgrading a disk less than a few years old is not worth it at any price!
