2008 TL Type-S headrest monitors

I am looking to install screens in to the headrests of my 2008 TL Type-S. I purchased the Alpine PKG-M780, but when I got them yesterday, they seem a little wide.

I want to make sure, before I got cutting in to my headrests, that I have a good/clean install.

Has anybody done this particular screen in a 3rd-gen Type-S?

Any recommendations for smaller screens? NESAvision reviews?

I'm guessing a 6.2" would fit.

Yeah, he has a regular TL. I am not sure how different the headrests are, however, my headrests become more narrow as it gets closer to the top.

I could probably make it work if I keep it towards the bottom, but I would like to center it more, vertically.

I am looking at http://www.nesavision.com/product_su...ct_s11_01.html

and

http://www.clarion.com/us/en/product...408777925.html

I really love the Alpine screens, but that install above doesn't look right.

Thoughts anyone?

what doesn't look right? i'm not sure if it could be a better install unless you bought custom headrests. but yeah i suppose it is a rather tight fit. i honestly just went with what custom sounds recommended; they are professionals with lots of experience.

also i think any headrest monitors will look a little funny on the TL because of the shape of the headrests on the TL. so i would strongly suggest you go with something that has a very flat surface like the aplines because the TL headrests rest a bit slanted.

i personally think the alpines i have were made for the TL because the color of the monitors goes perfect with the TL-S interior. i mean just look at the pictures in my post again

I think your install is the best that it could ever to be, but I think with me doing it myself, and the size of the screen compared to headrests pose a much greater risk that I want to take at this point. I absolutely love the screens, and wish I had the balls to do it, but it would require me shaving the bracket. I think I'd feel more comfortable with returning it and getting a 6.2" or 5.6" screen.

Would you mind taking more pictures for me? I haven't returned the screens yet and maybe you can convince me :P.

Do you know if they had to do anything to the posts when they cut in to the headrest to make it work?

Thanks

Also, do you know if they trimmed the brackets down? I'm just concerns about the top of the screens really. I don't want it to look "pinched".

oh ok, yeah i can't trust myself cutting anything into my car haha. so yeah i can't say much about DIY install other than be very careful. i don't think they had to shave or cut anything inside the headrests but i can check with them tomorrow. The exact model of my monitors actually are TME-M780, but it looks like the equivalent of what you bought. actually the border around your alpines look slightly longer so i dunno if they would fit. if you want, you can measure your monitors across for me to the nearest tenth of a centimeter and i will measure mine later.
im at work and im busy when i get off too but i'll try to post some pics and measure later tonight or tomorrow for you.

How did they get the wiring down to the seat? Are the poles hollow?

yeah, the headrest posts are hollow, and the Alpine cable fits through with no problems.

slightly snagged in the top left there. if it gets worse i'll have to get it fixed. anyway, so you get the idea of how they look. i dont think 6.2" would look bad either. i do love alpine brand though. if there is some other angle shot you need, let me know
oh and my monitors are exactly 6 and 3/4 inches across

Thanks for the additional pics and pointing that out. They look good, and flush, but being that I'm going to try it myself, I think I'll go smaller. I do wish I could fit these screens though, they're very nice!

Well, I was bored today and decided to take on this project.

As I have NEVER done anything like this, it was definitely a learning experience. Since I didn't have much to go on (and couldn't find anything substantial online) I decided to take some pics.

http://www.facebook.com/album.php?ai...5&l=93c0446724

It took me about 4 hours to do one headrest. On the pictures after the install, the middle bottom sags a little, but I was running out of time. I am going to work on this more to fix it better.

I still have the other headrest to go, and I am going to experiment a bit to see what I can do to make it look PERFECT. I'll post additional pics as I make progress.

I don't expect to work on this for two weeks or so.

Good job on the attempt!

One question... How come yours has that frame around the screen and Screwologist's doesn't? Seems much bigger with that frame. Do I have the option of not installing it?

What did you guys connect the parking brake lead from the harness to?

I'm assuming I can just ground this lead?

Working on this mod now so I'd appreciate the help.

Thanks Bear... But mmade22's DIY doesn't address the parking brake lead from the monitor harness.

All I really need to know is where to connect this lead. I'm assuming it's either a positive or negative trigger.

Here is a link to the manual. Wire #2 in the diagram on page 11.

rhutchison - If you still have your Alpines, I will buy them from you. This is going to be my summer-09 project.

From reading this thread, I gathered that rhutchison has indeed installed these monitors in his headrests. This being said, I don't think he will be selling them at this time.
