How about you "floor" it in auto, then switch to "SS" once the trans shifts down in auto??

 

Think OP only downshifted to 4th instead of 3rd in SS mode and auto did this for him 2nd go round. If I have to pass someone on a state highway (55mph) I'll drop to 2nd and explode, sure its only for like 2 secs but if you want to pass someone quick a TL can def do it better in SS mode (it wont shift for you either, except 1st to 2nd... another post implied it would)
