Would this look stupid...

on an automatic?

Im thinking of buying it, and i know it is meant for manuals. So do you all think it would look fine in an automatic? I have the tan woodgrain interior on my 04.
If you took the time to open this thread, take a quick second to reply yes, no, or are you out of your mind?

Thanks!

If you want people to think you drive a stick when they peer in your window and the car is parked, do it.

Otherwise, it's just up to your preference. I would think I would prefer the stock shifter, but it's all preference.

Although I think auto and manual shift knobs normally install differently. Are you sure it's compatible?

I believe that since the automatic shifters do not have a button on the side it should be compatible. Am i correct?
But i just wanted something different in my interior. I would love the woodgrain shift knob that acura makes, but they are hard to find for a reasonable price.

i think it would really clash with your interior. tan & woodgrain and then BAM some big brushed metal shift knob. i would imagine it would seem horribly out of place. get the burlwood shift knob...it looks perfect with the woodgrain in ur ride already. that's what i'm sportin and it looks good. all just my opinion tho.

Ah, I didn't know the auto TLs had no button. I would look for something a little less knobby, if that makes any sense at all. Something classier. A leather knob with a wood grain insert would be pretty sweet, but I doubt anybody makes anything like that.

I would have to see the OEM knob to give you a valid opinion. I've only ever driven 2 auto TLs, and those were dealer test drives.

There is aluminum trim going from the center console up to the radio, even in the tan interior cars. I dont think it would look that bad actually. Having had many different shift knobs in my other cars, I will say that is going to be hot as F if you park in the sun. My favorite shift knob is the OEM Honda Fit one, and I have one made of teflon plastic in my Civic, never gets hot. Shift knobs are like shoes, and take 30 seconds to swap. If its not that expensive, just get it.

I think it would be personal preference. I don't see anything wrong with it.

I feel like it would be okay, but the whole BAM aluminium in the interior of a tan leather woodgrain kinda opened my mind. I think im going to hold out and look for a nice woodgrain one. But they're expensive! Hopefully i can find one used!

Thanks guys.

i agree with what some others said, the biggest draw back for me is that it is a giant hunk of metal that either gets really hot during the summer and takes forever to cool down or gets freezing cold in the winter and takes forever to warm up.

I'm never buying a metal knob again. Hot in summer, cold in winter. They pretty much suck.

I bought a red stitched boot for my 5AT... I haven’t had an upholster put it in yet, but I did it because It will make the interior look cleaner, not trying to pass for manual I just like the look. Plus why do I need to see what gear I am in when it already lists in our cluster =D

Haha, I thought it's a knob that makes an auto look like a manual, meaning you got the leather pouch covering the lettering of gears.

Heeltoe sells that shift knob for autos as well. Don't see any problems with it, it still matches your silver trim and radio volume/tuning controls.

I like the idea....i was thinking of going with black leather with blue stitching...

I would wait out for some with a little more wood grain so it flows well with the interior and I would DEFINITELY stray away from metal....while buying my car i was test driving a stick is300 with those metal shift knobs and the minute i sat in the car and touched the knob i yelled as loud as I could....didnt see that one coming

I do have aluminium shift knob in my TL. It doesn’t clash to much due to metal trim running along the sides of the console.

I am looking for a TL Type S shift knob for my 2008 TL Type-S. Furthermore, do you think it would look bad if I put the 2003 Type S shifter in my 2008 Type S?

no to the leather shift boot if you have a automatic. that is called rice

and no to the big ass steel block being a shift knob replacement. like above poster said, OEM or type-s carbon fiber knob from the auto

I want this R8 style knob!!! I know some were made with "Type-S" machined into them a while back, and if anyone knows where/how I could get my hands on one, I'd really appreciate it

Putting the leather shift boot is not rice. I have it done to my car and it cleans up the center console. It adds a little symetry to it. IMO that silver shift gate that they have there is ugly and should have never been designed with the car. There is a shift gate under so that you can whatever you want on top. I dont pretend that my auto is a manual but like I said, it does give it a cleaner look.
And if anyone was worried about knowing what gear you were in, we have indications on the gauge cluster to tell you.
If I had my car with me I would take some pics, but I have goten nothing but compliments on that little modification.
In the end though, its all personal preference.

^^^ I wouldnt put a boot on an AT....no matter what you say its not justified LOL

the only reason I would do it so that if someone tries to steal my car, would be confused....the look on the robbers face when he is trying to find a fucking clutch on an AT just coz of the boot....

of course they are gonna give you compliments. most likely the people you showed it to are:
not REAL car enthusiasts.
a ricer

your right, it does clean up the interior look of the car.

but i still say leather shift boot with custom knob on a auto = rice

i still have the stock knob, and no one called it rice when we used to have the meets in VA. do you call the BMW's and Mercedes that have the boots for their autos "rice", i dont think so.

Again its all about personal preference

So i guess the new AT cars with leather shift boots coming from Acura, BMW, and other major car makers are finally conforming to the rice culture. /sarcasm

Thumbs down for this comment.

^^^ am surprised there is no mod yet to put "non functional" paddle shifters on these cars....that would sell a lottttt.....

so u can put a boot and the paddle shifters and say "ohhh my tranny is special....it switches from paddle to stick as and when i need"

lol wut. I don't think you get it, so don't jump the gun. There are many parts on a car that are "non-functional" or "not justified'. Why do car companies put them on anyway? Aesthetics is just as important as performance for today's consumers.

Would you say the quad-exhaust for the ISF is for aesthetics or function? Oh right... Lexus is a ricer company.

lulz. This is so rice right here:

^^^ well we have to agree to disagree coz i can find couple things in the pic which I can point out to justify its rice and you will have couple points that justify its clean....

and besides in the end of the day its ur car and your entitled to do whatever u want to it

I was originally intending this to be about this shift knob only... But hey, we can talk about some boots.

Swoosh, you always say it right- its ur car and your entitled to do whatever u want to it
