if the insurance wont cover it for free... get any regular place to replace the glass. the galss is not special and any aftermarket one will be the same.

Ummm, the 04 windshield is a little different.. When mine cracked, I just called my insurance and told them I needed to get it from the dealer because of the sound proofing. They called the dealer, got the wholesale price and then I took the car in to have it installed.

Be prepared, I think the windshield was $480.....

I thought the windshield has a coating on the inside for sound deadening. Also, I remember at least one thread here where someone got aftermarket glass and it cracked again in a short period of time. On a car as new as the TL, I would insist on original equipment replacement glass.

So if any aftermarket one would be the same, does this mean the acoustic window with special layers inside is just the lie from Acura?

why doesnt somene try a test. play radio next to two cars, one TL and one not. see if it really "deafens" the sound when you are inside the TL.

$480 is really cheap for Honda OEM. Was that price including installation? When I had to get a quote to replace the windshield on a 03 Honda Accord, they tried to get me for over $700! I told them to forget it and had Elite Auto Glass put one in for $208. I didn't care since I was selling it anyway.

I don't know if the TL has special glass or not. However, I would probably call around and get the best price I could from the Acura dealership or just live with the crack. Here in Colorado, windshields are always cracking due to the fact that they put down rocks on the road for traction during winter. Man, I miss the East coast.

Windshield

Had mine replaced last week, aftermarket is more expensive, according to the glass shoppe. It's $600 for OEM and $617 for the aftermarket. For some reason this TL is attracting a lot of stone/pebble to the windshield compared to my previous cars... no I am not a tailgater. I think the glass is not as durable as it should be.

Even though that sounds crazy, it does seem like the TL is attracting a lot of stone/pebbles to the windsheild. I must have had at least 5-7 hit my glass in the 3 months I have had the car. This last one really did it though....Wonder if thats even possible that just because of this car, it is attracting rocks!! CANT BE!!

Small holes and cracks can be repaired on the car. The last I heard, if the crack is about 1" or so it would cost about $35 to repair, but this may have changed. Insurance companies will usually pay for this repair because it saves them the cost of a new windshield. Most of the time you would have to look hard to detect the repaired place. Check with any glass shop for more info.

I'm real parnoid about that. I had years ago a piece of frozen dirt fall off of truck and bounce under my car and put a hole in gas tank. Also had part of railing fall off of flatbed and almost flew thru my windshield. Luckily hit column which deflected it from coming completely thru windshield or I wound of been a gonner. Guess it wasn't my time.

So anyway, I stay far back from trucks when possible if I have to be in back of one.

the layer inbetween the two plies of the windshield is indeed a custom job on this car. All winshields are two-ply with the middle layer being what holds it together when the body er, i mean, rock hits it so that it doesn't fall to pieces.

In the 04TL, that layer is also formulated to disperse sound energy (outside noise) so that it doesn't pass thru.

As a test try this, go into a parking lot of a strip mall where there are parking spots right on the side of the road and park perpendicular to the road, nose facing the road. Turn off the car, all windows up and roof closed. Listen for a car to go by, you'll hear it in the side window, then it goes nearly dead when in front, then you'll hear it in the other side window.

In Mass, assuming you have comprehensive on your insurance policy there is no glass deductible. So other than the aggravation of getting the glass replaced there should be no out of pocket expense for you.

I can definitely vouch for that. I've had the windshield replaced on my 97 Camry 3 times and it didn't cost me a penny. Glass companies make it a point to advertise all over the place so that you are no more than a call away from 24 hour turn around mobile service once the need arises. And if it's not cracked bad enough, they will crack it while they remove the old one. Go figure!

There is no doubt in my mind that the glass on the TL is more suseptible to chipping than any other Honda product I've owned, and I've owned too many to count.

It may be great acoustically, but all 3 rocks that I've taken have left chips that other Honda windshields would have just deflected. Three times I expected to just wipe off the scuffy dirt mark to find unharmed glass underneath, and all three times I got the unexpected result.

The 04TL windshield is typical based on the new cars I've owned. I currently have a very small pit in the lower right side from a rock. I have heard other hits with rocks, but they didn't do any damage to the windshield.

BTW, windshields appear to be more susceptible to chips when new, and do much better after they have aged (hardened) for a year or so. Rain-X also seems to make windshields more likely to get rock chips, so I don't use it the first winter I have a new car.
