Will side moldings really help from dings?

I doubt they will unless the car door hitting your car it perfectly straight. I am not sure if they are worth putting on yet. Anyone have them installed and have opinions on this?

I had mine put on at delivery, back in May. I park every day in a parking garage, and so far haven't had a single ding or scratch. FWIW.

Agree to your points. But it could be better than nothing in some occasions. Also, tons of ppl have it installed. If you search, you would be able to see lots relative threads.

Thumbs up

BSM is a must. Had it on my 91 integra for all those years and had very few
dings.... I got them on my TL but had the dealer place them 1" higher than their standard location. Looks great and works even better. I would HIGHLY recommend BSM placed 1-2" higher though to maximize protection....

I don't have an opinion on door dings (also don't want to jinx myself commenting on whether I have any or not!), but I think the BSM is worth it anyway because IMO it makes the side of the car look more complete--it is a nice offset to the indented groove further up the doors.

Worth every cent. After 14 months no dings on doors but lots of marks on the bsm's which would have been dents.

I had them installed when I took delivery. As stated by others, some protection is better than none and if you have NBP you can barely even notice them.

It's very good for protection...but IMO the car looks better without them

I don't have door guard moldings, but the door ding where my buddy's Jetta door (upper corner) hit my car is no where near the door guard moldings strip. It all depends on the shape of the door that comes in contact with the car. Like SUV's for example, their doors are higher than a car and the bottom corner of the door will come in contact with a car with/without door moldings. I agree that door molding do work, but not all the time.

All depends where you want the dings and scrapes. On my old car I had the BSM's and sure enough they took a couple big hits - thus saving the door, but you then have a ding/scrape etc. on the BSM. So either way you have damage to look at or replace. Yes, some will say cheaper to replace BSM than actual dent in door, but ya still gotta repair something! I am not a fan of them and as someone said depends what hits you. On another old car - a shopping cart fit nicely right under the BSM - now that was a nice mark!

Gotta do what you want to do - whatever is nicer on your eyes in your opinion.

They'll protect your door for the most part, but unfortunately like the Acura Door Edge Trim, they're painted metal, and will easily catch marks themselves. Your only hope is to do what I did....have strips of 3M Paint Protection Film installed on them.

You can get them here for $140 + shipping.

They come with complete instructions and templates and are very easy to install. The dealer will probably charge around $50 for installation, but you can ask the service manager to be sure.

They are definitely plastic, not metal. The door edge trim is metal, though.

... or hang a old car tire out the window, just like boats do.

nah, just park far away, it's the only way. door bumbers and side mouldings dont protect from the Expeditions doors that get flung open by the rugrats....

No - by Murphy's Law and my own research over many years and with the 35 cars I have owned, dings come from the 4th dimension, and exist only in space-time. There is no protection against them. Think of them like a global killer asteroid or comet.

Murphy has proven that the rat-rod parked next to you will alweays have its door's sharpest point at the greatest distance from your side molding.

Before buying my TL I looked at cars with them. The max width of the car appeared to be above the BSM. That said I would imagine it depends on the car that takes a swipe at you. If the door of that car happened to meet the BSM, then it's worth it. I had it on my old Accord, but it was at the max width and a good height and eemed to do the job. Otherwise, I figured it was an asthetic choice.
