I can't seem to find the MAF sensor in my 2007 TLS. ODB2 can read it, so it's gotta be there somewhere. I can't even find it in the parts diagrams on part sales sites. Does it exist independently or part of something else?

 

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think Honda J-Series engines use a MAF sensor; my understanding is the J-Series uses a MAP sensor.

• MAF = Mass Air Flow sensor
• MAP = Manifold Absolute Pressure sensor

 

That's what I thought, BUT, the ODB2 does give a value for MAF readouts in lb/min, separate from MAP readouts in kPa. The two figures get lively updated when driving, and are independent of each other. That leads me to believe that there is a MAF somewhere, perhaps.

 

A MAF sensor would be pretty obvious with the air intake system. There isn't one on my 2007 base model.

 

The MAP sensor is locate on top of the throttle body assembly. Honda J series use MAP instead of MAF. part label 3 on the pic

 

As clarification, yes, the 3G TL uses a MAP sensor, but some Honda/Acura vehicles with the J-series use a MAF sensor. The 4G TL, TLX and 3G MDX use MAF. I'm not sure why they switch it up.

 

Thanks to all of you clarifying for a newbie like me. I'll be cleaning the MAP this weekend. Am I correct to assume that I could just use a MAF sensor cleaner/spray to clean the MAP (avoiding the electrical contacts, of course)?

 

buy a new one, cleaning the old one won't solve you a thing. Beside our TL is drive by wire, any fluid contact and you will be buying a new throttle body assembly.

 

Correct, the cleaner should be fine for either sensor. I used the same cleaner on my MAP sensor some time ago with no negative results.

Lol! ok, an explanation is in order. I was having the common 'hesitation' issues under light-to-medium throttle. I had a K&N replacement filter and figured that the MAP might have gotten some oil on it. The MAP looked clean visually but I sprayed it with the cleaner anyway. No change in the hesitation (no worse, no better). What i finally discovered was the premium gas i was pumping was the issue. Here in the MidWest most premium contains Ethanol. After i switched to non-Ethanol premium the hesitation issues went away.

 

Hmmm, all we can buy here in New England is E10, regardless of grade. I never have any hesitation in my TL.

 

Count yourself lucky! We are stuck with 15% out here and hesitation issues are a common problem (search this blog and you'll see...)
