Whatever happened to......Road Rage?????
Hello gang! Nice to be here again. Nice to be anywhere, really. Since 2006, I sold my 2004 S-2000, bought a 2010 Nissan GT-R, sold that at the high water mark, got pneumonia Christmas 2008 and spent 11 days in ICU (4 days on ventilator!!0, proved too hard to kill. Still have my 2004 TL, still using (German) Castrol Syntec 0w30, Amsoil ATF (3 years and still good!), and looking for a replacement for the GT-R. I sold that because the cost of maintaining it ceased to be fun when things like $80/quart tranny fluid and $5,000 brake jobs came to light. That is not fun, that is racing team cost.
Probably going to buy a 2011 Mustang with the new 5-liter engine. 412 naturally aspirated HP, easy to work on, and new 6-speed auto and manual trannies to boot! I like its looks, Ford will probably survive, that car will be fun to work on, and it has very strong internals, except a power adder will likely require new con-rods and lower compression pistons. The rest of the design is quite strong, with 4 bolt mains, strong crank, roller cam/lifters, etc. Ford hgave its engineers a lot of leash, and they determined to overcome the probs of the 4.6L modular engine, and the gap in cubes compared to the 6.2L Chevies. The HP ponycar wars still rage, my friends, but I think the 'Stang is a better package overall, and has the best stock exhaust note in all of autodom.
I'd like to thank the many well-wishers and moderators who left notes, and to those who sent PM's and never got a reply, would I have had to die for you to forgive me?

WB! Glad to hear things are on the upswing. I agree the new 5.0 is a winner. Any pics of your GT-R?

the Mustang GT would be an ideal choice. parts are cheap and available, so is maintenance. A pure American muscle, but I would look into the new Camaros as well. A whole lot of difference between the Japanese Samurai and the American muscle cars though.

I am also thinking of the new Mustang but am in no hurry to unload my '04 manual TL. I have retired so while money is not an issue, one does need to be prudent and frugal where needed. I think Ford is definitely the company to beat. Government, I mean, General Motors had to take money from us to survive - Ford didn't and had a 43% increase in sales here recently.
In 1987, I ordered an '88 Mustang LX with the 302 package (I hate the term liters - this IS America). That was one of the best cars I have ever owned and also one of the most reliable. Hard to beat that little small block. The new Mustang really looks promising and I hope Ford kicks butt with it.
Again, welcome back. Good to have you here again.

Glad you're well and welcome back!
Thought you might want to know that because of your thoughtful threads I'm running L.E. in my crankcase and Amsoil in my tranny. Thanks!

Welcome back!
Not to fond of the new mustangs at all especially the exterior.
I would aim at a 335i or M3. Buying a new bimmer would require you 0 maintenance, because BMW will pay for it for a duration of miles/years. You can easily buy the extension. The M3 is a whole other animal than the mustang/todays american muscle. Better gas mileage than the Mustang, looks tons better, and controls 100x better. Though M3's iDrive is a pain in the ass to learn, it is the best. M3 > any current new american muscle car thats priced not over 90k.
Now if it was my choice, keep the TL, buy a 67' Camaro and have fun modding that shit out. Been helping with a Camaro project with my Uncle and we're almost to 1700 BHP.

Nice to see you're healthy and back in the groove, RR! I can't believe the maintenance cost for the GT-R....yikes!

Welcome back! I've never participated in discussions with you but I've learned a lot from your threads and posts. I love the 2011 Mustang GT.... they said during testing the 2011 GT was running laptimes that were not very far behind the M3. If I were in the market for a new car, I'd get one. Never was a fan of the GTR though.

I guess nearly being on par with an M3 around a road course just isn't enough for some people

Antiquated thinking on Ford's behalf and consumers' behalf is part of what hurt them.

Welcome back, RR! Your insightful posts were missed in your absence. Glad you're feeling better, and I hope all continues to go well for you.
As for the 2011 Mustang, that's on my list, as well. More to say, that is my list, for pretty much the same reasons you mentioned.

Road Rage,
Good to hear from you! I always wondered where you went...I'm sorry to hear about your days in the ICU, but it's all in the past; take better care of yourself! Stay healthy, live long bro! Good luck with the Stang. I drove one a few days ago before I checked out a few other cars out. Definitely had some nice go, and it looked mean! Interior was a bit under par though but ALL GOOD! Have fun!!!

Never been a big fan of FORD but understand and appreciate what they have been able to do over the past couple of years (no hand outs). A guy I work with has been a FORD guy through and through for years - Mustang after Mustang after Mustang. I bust his chops saying FORD = Fixed Or Repaired Daily or Found On Road Dead. His response - First On Race Day. He feels somewhat betrayed as he is driving a 2010 stang all done up only to find out what they have planned for 2011........

Good to see you RR. Not much of a Stang fan, more of a Camaro fan, though I do have to admit that new 5.0 and the unmistakable sound of a Mustang rules.
It might piss some people off but going GT-R is a serious downgrade IMO. Why not find a middle ground in let's say a Corvette ZO6 or Dodge Viper? Corvette definitely is a king compared to those mere pony cars. Maintenance costs should be tolerable.

RR, great to have you back. I've quietly read all of you RR Journals and in conjunction with the fellow above, I feel like my knowledge of the TL and automobiles in general has grown significantly.
