Graduating this semester with a B.S. in Petroleum Geology. Already been working for an oil company for 2 years and got offered the job today. He told me to think about what my starting salary should be, etc....lets hope it's 6 figures or close! $80K+ at 24 isn't too shabby

Microbiologist making 60K. But that's only enough for living expenses and mortgage. I build and service PC's on the side which makes about 30K which is what pays the payment, fuel and mods. Never could have bought it if it weren't for my side business.

Neat thread, glad someone found this. I love the guy who posted back in 2003 about how the "shakeout" in IT got all of the "overnight Sr. Web Developers" back to answering phones and bagging groceries where they belong. Lol, so true.
28 years old, wife + 2 kids, make about 150k in software development for an investment firm.
Sold my other TL, put the money towards my Type-S, and took out a 12 month term paying $800/mo. with a few months left to go at this point.
Most of my cash goes to investment properties, one of which I live in and got for next to nothing - rehabbed in sweat equity with my partner, so my mortgage is only $400/mo.
I travel pretty light. Don't carry other debt.

At the risk of sounding spoiled....
I will be 18 in April
2007 TL Type-S
$107/month for insurance
$320/month payments for the next 5 years. But I am paying more and it will be payed off in 3 years or less. I'm also transferring the loan into my name with my parent as a co-signer when I turn 18 with the same payments.(or less if I go through a different bank)
Part-time Student/Work part-time. Paying it off with the child support I get every month, which I will get until I am 21 if I stay in school. Paying for school with money from work and financial aid through my college. Currently work at a hospital part-time delivering food to patients and helping in the kitchen. Not bad for $9/hr.
Plan to finish out my associates in Criminal Justice and become a police officer or maybe work in corrections at 21.(minimum age to work in those fields) Then later on in life get my Bachelors which most departments will pay for you to do.
I paid $4k for a '97 Maxima a year ago, so needless to say it's a nice upgrade. I'm very happy with my TL. I'm very fortunate that my parents have good credit, and not only that, but this will seriously help build my credit by the time it is paid off. But truth be told I only did it because of the child support. I wouldn't have if I only worked because if I was to be laid off for some reason I would be screwed. Not a risk I would be willing to take.

holly crap everyone here make $50k+ a year. I am working for Alcoa as Finishing Tech (NDT FPI and QC inspector) regular income is about $32k a year with OT $55k is possible. I bought the TL with my save up money and I can afford the payment because the down payment is worth 70% over all value of the car.

If you're not referring to parole/probation, I personally would not recommend becoming a Corrections Officer in a state jail or prison. It's extremely mundane and you are easily replaceable unless you are a sergeant or higher. Unless that is your aspiration, a good CJ student would benefit better in field or office work. Not to mention you WILL deal with a lot of crap in a correctional dept. Possibly even literally at some point.

Holy crap how are you software devs making that much money? I'm a software developer with a BSc in comp-sci and I only make 70k which I thought was decent. What do I need to do to make 140k? Do you guys have MSc degrees?

Oilfield make about 100k/year or a little more and I put 15% into 401k and stock purchase.
Pay 352/month but will pay off in 2 years. insurance not sure. I pay full coverage on my car and wifes van and liability only on pickup and its just under 600.00 every 6 months paid in full for all 3.
This is a 3rd car for me and I rarely ever drive it. 2500 miles since June '11 is all she has seen.
But I get a company truck as well so I really don't need a vehicle at all except for days off.
And thats with a high school education and some college lol.

Keep to this type of thinking. Cash for just about everything short of a house and sometimes major purchases like cars and home improvements, though even those are best paid for with cash if possible.

werd. They key is living within your means. A lot of people have a problem with this, especially with the up and coming "gen y" that think they're entitled to things. I dont make nearly as much as some people here but i still live comfortably. The way I live is stress free financially.

Also note what part of the US they are in. The 140k in CA won't be quite that much in say the mid-west. If those guys weren't making 140k, they would barely be able to afford a small apartment in those parts.
As for myself, Security Admin for an aerospace company. My TL didn't cost me that much more than any of my prior cars since it was used. Traded my tC in which gave me close to $6k down payment (that car held it's value stupidly well) on the TL.

I'm a database administrator and my wife is a teacher.
Mortgage was paid off a few months ago
RRSP(Canada's 401k) are maxed out
2005 MDX is paid off
We could have bought a new car but I like the design of the 3rd gen TL and more importantly the reliability of Honda. Got a used 50k km 2008 and paying it over 25 months at .25% rate. No reason to put any cash down with that special rate and they would not give me a rebate if I paid cash.
I still might get a more expensive car someday as a gift to myself for my midlife crisis. I figure something like a roadster. Right now it would be a BMW Z4 but maybe a new model of Honda's S2000 will interest me by the time I get to that age.

I should clarify what I posted earlier in this thread - my base is 100k but being at an investment firm, we have enormous bonus bands - if you pull off some serious shit in any given year, you can have no problem getting a 100% bonus and essentially doubling your gross income. Bonus is taxed at about 25% here so the net income would take a hit but still a good chunk of change.
A lot really just depends on where you're located, whether or not you consult or are an FTE, and if you do consult, if it's through a staffing agency or if you independently contract. Lots of factors here, but also consider cost of living differences where people live. If I was in Chicago or Silicon Valley, my income would be nowhere near as powerful as it is where I am currently located. The number 100k+ is utterly meaningless by itself so keep it in context of where you live.
My degree is in MCS (management computer systems) and honestly I worked as a software developer/engineer for 6 years making 60k in a company heavily focused in manufacturing. Decided I was being paid way under market and got fed up, so I found a new job in about a week (the market is good right now for IT), most places where I live would pay someone with my skillsets closer to 80k. But I went financial.
The big thing is the sector - I got into the financial sector which is an entirely different world. The average financial firm IT-spend budget is around 12%, where most other sectors (retail, manufacturing, etc.) average 3%. It's just a totally different world.
You can easily pull 150k with bonus in the financial sector at the right firm, particularly with investment companies.
But do not think that at 70k you're getting screwed.
