Just got my 2008 TL-S. Love the car, happy with it. I traded in my 04 TL.
I was curious what kind of offers some of you got for your trade-ins(and what you eventually negotiated up to or if you accepted that offer) and how it related to the KBB trade in value. I'll start.
KBB value at time of trade - 8200
Initial lowball offer: 5,500
Final trade in offer 7,000 (accepted)
My 04 tl had nothing wrong with it--120k perfect condition, though it did have an accident on the carfax that was so minor I forgot it(less than 1k of repair) They were treating that like it was a salvage title or something...lol. All part of the game I guess.
They had the car I wanted (in awesome condition) that was rare at a very competitive price. (08 tl-s manual).

I had a 2002 TL Base and the Canadian Black Book value on the car at the time of sale (KBB not used here) was $4,800. A local Acura dealer offered me $2,100 - I said no thanks! I ended up selling the car privately for $5,000.00.

Not quite the same thing and not the dealer, but the insurance adjuster of the guy that hit my Maxima wanted to give me like $2100 for it. I fought them on the trim level, custom wheels, condition, etc. and got like $2750. Not a lot dollar-wise, but a 30% swing is a lot! Fuggin' weasels at a no-name, discount insurance provider.
Anyway, I think some of the difference in their offers is not so much offering more for your trade as coming down on the price of the car you're buying. It's a combination of the two. I know I never do it, but you're supposed to negotiate the price of the new car first and foremost, then worry about your trade-in, financing, etc. I suck at negotiating, but did okay with the deal on my TL.

When I traded my 04 TL with 92K miles in for the G35 the TL was in the book for $9500 for a clean trade. The dealers first offer was for $9000. According to the paperwork, they ended up giving me $10,445 trade for the TL. I gave them the rest in cash for the G35 and we swapped title for title. I know them, worked for them for 2 years and have purchased three cars there since 2006 that's why I was able to get such a good deal.

I had a 2000 Mitsubishi Eclipse with 105k on it and my brother ran into an SUV with and smashed the front end pretty good. KBB in "perfect" condition was 4k, dealers wouldn't give me more than 2,200 for it. I ended up selling it as is to a stripper for 3,700 bucks and she loves it lol.

Unfortunately you're not there when they go to resell your car whether it be at the auction or on the lot to explain the "minor" accident. People freak out when they see accident reports and since carfax doesnt offer a detailed expalantion people just assume the worst.
I probably could have done better selling it on my own but I knew I had to move quickly to get the car I wanted to buy.

I paid $9500 for my TSX ( 54k miles ) and traded it in for $8000 (78k miles ) a year later for an 06 TL and amazing condition. I had multiple low balls of $6000-$7000 by dealers and offers ranging from $8000-$10,000 but private parties. The private parties obviously consisted of children, unqualified buyers, or people that like to waste others peoples time. Im extreamly happy with the outcome because my TSX did have some issues and the TL has been amazing except for the 21MPGs im getting.
The TSX was on KBB.com for 10,000 - 12,500. The dealer has it for sale 11,900

'99 Honda Accord- 5MT, 160K miles, good condition. Got offers of $2500 and $2200 at different dealerships. Said hell to that and sold it myself for an even $4000 in less than two weeks.
Trades are usually a crock. You're essentially purchasing "convenience" when you trade a car in since you're not having to clean it, list it and show it to buyers. Since I have more time than money, I'd rather sell myself. Hopefully that will one day change

when i tried to trade in my 2006 TL the KBB was about 15,000 the car car only had 50K on it .............every where i went they offered me even the ACURA dealership i got it serviced at 11K ......so i kept searching and searching and the last ACURA dealership i went to gave me 15K for it so i jumped into the new 0ne.........
So after i got the 2011 TL my wife wanted to upgrade from her camry to a more better car so we searched dealers and ended up in infiniti she was looking at the G.............and the M37X caught my eye so i tried to trade in my new TL for it so i looked at what kbb was saying and they didnt have an option for the 2011 ........so i ran the same scenario with the 2010 ....and they said worst case scenario ...........29K ...so i go to infiniti...................you wanna hear low ball..........they tell me they can't do more than 25K max on that car ...............originally they wanted to give me 23,500 .......so i try bmw with hopes of the 6 series or the 535XI .........the original dealer i went to said just without seeing it we can start the offer at 26K.....

Valid point. I had all the paperwork on everything (police report and damage) but they didnt seem to care. Accident is an accident. Its unfortunate but once you get aything reported to carfax it will really come back to haunt you.
I probably could have done better selling it on my own but I knew I had to move quickly to get the car I wanted to buy.

Yeah I had a guy who was extremely baffled that an accident of any kind lowered the trade value on his 09 370z. The dude was an idiot though, he wanted KBB excellent and the passenger side fender and door was a totally different shade paint than everything else! Worst part about it was that the car was yellow! So two different shade yellows and he couldnt understand why that brought down the value. Dude was like really mad like we were the ones who fucked his shit up. These are the customers that make rude and pissed off salesman. You want a cool salesman who's willing to work with you, dont be this guy LOL
I knew if I didnt buy the car it would be gone within a few days. Demand is super high. Overall Im happy. On a side note when my car had 100,000 miles on it Another acura dealer offered me 5,200 ! Never went there again.

My 2001 BMW 525i trade
Before I bought my 07 TL type S 6MT, I was selling my 2001 BMW 525i sport, manual with 75K miles. The car was in excellent condition. Took it to Carmax, they offerd me $9,000 for my car. I said thank you and walked out. Blue book trade in was $15K, private party was $17K. Ended up selling it privately for $17,500. This was my one and only experience with Carmax. I was very surprised/disappointed as I heard good things about them.

Sounds like your a car salesman. Thats cool. I try to understand both sides of the fence. I still think the offer was low for my car BUT--bottom line is they had a TL type S (Manual !) in REALLY good shape in the color combo I wanted. Price was excellent compared to some of the numbers some dealers are asking for now(seen them in the 28-30 range).

But yeah the manuals are super rare. We had one a couple days ago that was CBP with the light interior that was super clean with 54K. My used car manager was crazy and listed it for $20,900 and it sold in two days...
