(just so you know... 75k in Boston is equivilent to making 50k here in Ohio) Not to mention, living in Mass used to cost me close to 32% income tax compared to only around 27%-28% here in Ohio.
I always wondered why my coworker from Boston, always called that place Tax-a-chussets

But anyways, just because you make a lot of money, doesn't always mean you buy nice cars, and just because you don't make much at all, doesn't mean you don't. I have a family friend that makes many millions a year (real-estate kingpin), yet they are the most frugle people I know. Drives an 84'ish Dodge Caravan. Yet when I was living in LA, it was common to see a junky apartment, in a slummy neighborhood, with a shiny Lexus parked in the assigned parking spot. It's all a matter of where your priorites are in life. Some people go on extravagant vacations, others eat out at nice places, others have posh homes, others have bling bling cars, others have a combination of the above.

Have you ever read the book "the millionaire next door" it talks up these type of things...

frugle people buying cheap cars, taking care of them for decades... I must admit I felt a little guilty after spending so much on a car...but hey...I LOVE IT!@~~~!~

FOR YOUR INFORMATION: I am going to post this in each of jerky's polls to clear up any misunderstanding about invasion of privacy, or the ability to gather information by individual's screen names.

When the author initiates a poll, he has this option, printed directly from the poll input format:
Make votes public: Displays all users who voted, and what choice they voted for.

If this option is checked, then readers can access the names of each voter for each choice by clicking on the number of people who voted, second column from the right.

The number will appear as a clickable entry, underlined. If it is not, then the names of the voters are not accessible to anyone.

Since this poll has been set up to NOT allow people to see the name of each voter, there is no invasion of privacy or the ability to see who voted.

During the years when he was the richest man in the world Sam Walton drove an old Ford pickup truck. Now That's frugal taken to the extreme.

It's interesting to see where your actual wealth really is. Using the asset-to-debt ratio, you would be amazed at the amount of wealth the "average" joe in this country actually has. Of course a good deal, if not the overriding majority, of this wealth is in M3 money, it's still wealth. You might be surprised to find a number of your neighbors are millionaires and may not even be aware of it.

Thanks, rs808. But in all honesty, I find Florida to have lost much of its Southern flavor because of so much invasion from other states and other countries. It's a shame, really. Imagine if a bunch of Texans decided to migrate to Boston. In no time, Boston would no longer be Boston.

The indigenous character, tradition, history, institutions, and culture of a particular region of the country is what makes it so appealing. I hate to see this dissolved into a conglomeration of whatever. Be it New England, the midwest, or the South, these regions have their own unique richness which should be passed on to each generation.

Ever notice how news anchor people talk in some of these regions. I can't speak for New England because I've never been there, but in the South, most of them have a rather neutral accent. What gives? It's weird.

Hey, y'all.. please don't get the wrong impression of what I wrote. What I was actually trying to say is that I think distinct geographic and demographic characteristics is a GOOD thing.. not a bad thing.

Were I of a mind to vacation in Cape Cod, I would very much like to experience their customs and traditions. I would not wish to impose my Southern culture and upbringing on them.

Hope that keeps some people from trying to peg me as something I'm not.

If I made that I sure would be driving something better than a TL even though a tl is a great entry level luxury car.

A nice home, in a nice neighborhood, in a nice area in the bay area starts at 800k

nice home=3/2 single family home, newer or rebuilt
nice hood= nicer looking homes around it
nice area= not a ghetto
Incredible. Here in the Cleveland burbs, I live in a great, quiet, safe neighborhood with a brand-new (4 yr old) house, 4/3, 2200 sf house for around $220k. And I don't have to worry about hurricanes or earthquakes, just winter. I can afford bigger but want to save more for retirement. I can afford more car, but why buy a 5-series when I can get everything I need in a car out of my TL? It's definitely not my beater.....

Neuron Bob, the one thing that california has over some other areas (great areas like it sounds from your description) is:

High paying jobs (6 figures by 30 is common and attainable)
Great weather (no snow, no hot summers)
Higher education level and intelligence of general populace (great schools and ideas in area)
Access to rich culture, food, arts (this is pretty important to me, as i grew up in a bland environment)
Beaches, Snow, Mountains, Redwoods (all just a few hours away)
In the bay area there are so many weekend getaways i can take in the TL (wine country, santa cruz beach, monterey, lake tahoe, sac delta...etc)

These are things that I would never give up, as despite the high cost of living, these local ammenties make me "happy"!

But hey, "to each his own"!

A lot of you fail to recognize the many ways to wealth. One of which is recognizing a good value. Yes it is true that those making over $200K a year have options. The key is to recognize the best value regardless of cost. For me I could have had any number of other cars. The TL represented the best value for me. Looks, performance, Bluetooth etc. I would buy it again in a heartbeat. No reason to use up any more of my savings than I have to!

I lived in the Bay area for several years and still miss it, I enjoyed most of my time there. What keeps me from coming back are a) married a Clevelander who won't consider leaving and b) I was at Stanford when the Loma Prieta quake of 1989 hit.

Not here, except if you're a doc or lawyer. Many people here still think the height of career attainment is working for GM, Ford, or Chrysler. As Stephen King would say, "the world has moved on".

Great weather (no snow, no hot summers)
Got me beat there too.

Higher education level and intelligence of general populace (great schools and ideas in area)
Other than the city of Cleveland itself, there are a lot of great neighborhoods and suburbs with highly educated and intelligent people. There are some great neighborhoods in the city itself, but those are more exception than rule.

Access to rich culture, food, arts (this is pretty important to me, as i grew up in a bland environment)
Ever heard of a little outfit called the Cleveland Orchestra? One of the best orchestras on the planet. We are extremely active with off-Broadway plays, more so than most other cities. The Cleveland Museum of Art is one of the best in the country. We have a rich cultural life.

Beaches, Snow, Mountains, Redwoods (all just a few hours away)
In the bay area there are so many weekend getaways i can take in the TL (wine country, santa cruz beach, monterey, lake tahoe, sac delta...etc)
Uhhhh.....we got Lake Erie . OK, SF beats us here too. Luckily, we are within driving distance of Chicago (5 hrs or <1 hr flight), New York (7 hours, or 1 hr flight), DC (5 hours or < 1 hr flight), and Toronto (3.5-4 hours, will be shorter when ferry service starts across Lake Erie in a couple of years, why bother flying?). We have fair skiing in West Virginia or PA, within 3 hours of the city.

But hey, "to each his own"!
There are nicer places to live, but the Cleveland area holds its own and really isn't as bad as the media make it out to be.

I live in Miami, and the cost of living is increasing almost exponentially. We're not quite where California is, but I would say that the percentage of increase over the last two to three years is one of the highest in the U.S.. Right now it is difficult to find a 4/2 in a central location < $500K, and that's a run down home. A home in good condition will at the very least cost you another $100K.
