What would be your next car?
If you were to look to upgrade from your current 3G TL/TL-S, are you like me and cautiously optimistic that the new TLX will be an awesome new version that is not like the 4G TL?
I have been holding out the hope that the new TLX will grab my attention just as the 3G has...but if it disappoints, what would be viable alternatives for used/new cars that you would consider...
Just curious...

Good question. I'd set the budget at $45k otd. The Accord EX-L V6 goes for low-mid $30s now brand-spankin new, so I would expand the budget to include contenders in a class above. I have been asking myself this question for quite some time... There isn't anything out right now that would justify me jumping out of my '08 TL-S at the moment. I am really hoping the TLX wows.
my plan is 2015-16 RDX...
BUT ONLY if they 'dress' it up a bit more
i.e.
-LED tails
-incorporate some 2013 accord technology
-cooler front end with LED drls or even jewel lights
IF none of that happens... i'll go for a used 2012-3 MDX.

I was baseing my decision on the accord off my budget and current means. But upping the budget to 45k I would take hard look at lexus and infinity. Don't think I'd buy a new Acura-I haven't been all that impressed with them the last couple years. I will say that the rlx looks sexy.
It's funny a thread like this came up because I've been researching new cars for about two weeks. My 3G is a long time from being put out to pasture, but I've always had an idea of what car I want next. Until the 3G anyways.
BMW, Volvo, Audi and Volkswagon are out. They don't have good enough reliability history for me to even consider them. Combined with the cost of parts, they're not on my list at all.
Here's my findings - for those of you that care
My requirements - <$50K, manual transmission, >300hp. Not all of these meet those requirements. And they aren't in order by preference.
1. Ford Taurus SHO - Seems pretty sweet overall. Total sleeper. Turbo V6 @ 365hp, 350ft/lb torque. Lotsa power. No manual
.
2. Ford Mustang - GT version is reasonably priced (Shelby is friggin schweet! but starts at $55K), optional manual, like the way it drives over the Camaro and Challenger. It's a big change from a TL and doesn't have the back seat space that I like with having a family. But a V8 growl with 420hp might be worth a worthy trade
3. Infinity G37 - V6 @ 330hp, starts at 40K, 6 speed option. Good specs but not a huge fan of the styling.
4. Chevy SS - New model for 2014. That's actually a downer though. Not big on brand new models. I'd rather wait a few years for the bugs to work out. Sleeper look. Tons of power. 6.2L V8 @ 415hp. No mention of a manual option on the webpage though.
5. Cadillac ATS - Somewhat new model - smaller sedan that looks to compete with the likes of the BMW 3 series and Audi A4. Manual only available with the Turbo 2.0 engine which doesn't get the best reviews but has as decent amoun of pep - Not as much as I'd like though @ 272hp.
6. Cadillac XTS and CTS - The XTS is a sedan, the CTS is a coupe (available in a sedan as the CTS Sport Sedan). Both are pretty sweet but neither have available manual transmissions. You have to get up to the CTS-V which is Caddy's "V racing series" to get a manual. At that point you're at $65K.
7. Subaru WRX STI - 6-speed w/305hp. The specs are great. But I've always viewed this car as "adolescent". It's a sweet car, don't get me wrong. I'd love to have one for rally or track racing. But for a DD, I just don't view it as a "grown-up's" car. It's just a stigma I have. No offense against anyone who owns one.
8. Lexus IS 350 - 8 speed auto and 306hp. No manual but an 8 speed auto from the ISF would be pretty sweet.
9. Acura TL - 305hp, 6-speed, AWD and I know Honda's pretty well. If I could just get past the styling.......
10. Hyundai Genesis Coupe - Available 3.8L 348hp engine, 6 speed, and only $30K. Definitely a competitor for the price. I've got a bad taste in my mouth due to Hyundai's crappy cars in the 90's and early 2000's. But it might not hurt to give them another try. They've come a long ways.

I'd probably keep the TL, it's a nice jack-of-all trades car and is worth more to me than whatever else 10-12k can get me. But realistically cars that I want, within budget, an AP2 S2000 or an E46 M3 and then cop a 5MT Honda CR-V 4WD and raised for my winter beater.
Considering i'm still a student... I really like the kia optima. Fully loaded of course, really debating about selling my tl-s and getting that brand new. decisions decisions...
Can't afford a new audi or bmw yet lol

A friend of mine has an Optima. Though Kia has come a very long way to be where they are right now in the automotive industry, I can't say that I would ever give up my TL-S for one.
