What RPM do you coast at?

For those of you who drive MT's, just curious to what RPM you coast at. What I mean by this is, when you are neither accelerating or decelerating, just keeping a constant speed what does your tach usually read.

I usually coast at 2000RPM, just wondering if that's a good number or if its too high or two low....what do you all think?

Well, if you're just cruising around and want to get your MPG up, you should be in the highest gear possible while not lagging the engine. The manual lists the speeds at which you can change to the next gear. I believe you can hit 6th at 44mph which is problably around 1500 rpm.

If you can keep your RPMs in the "running" range of around 2000 to 2500 RPM without lugging your engine, you'll probably be operating in the area of the best engine efficiency. Of course there are a mulitude of variables here, so this is a generality.

As for using 6th gear, I would recommend not going into 6th below 55 MPH, even though you may be on a level stretch of road (yes, there can be some exceptions). The reason I say this that if you need sudden acceleration, you're not going to get much in 6th gear at those speeds. As for the RPMs you engine will be turning in 6th.. at 60 MPH, your engine will be running at 2000 RPM straight up.

Otherwise, for suburban and urban driving, I would recommend having a few more RPMs and a lower gear to allow for those times when you really need to tip into the throttle. A good rule of thumb here is not to go into 4th below 30 MPH and maybe even a little higher if the conditions warrant it.

I'm usually at 2250-2500 around town. Gives me room for accelerating with same gear (won't lug) or for downshift, if needed. Gives me about 23 MPG in town. I don't go below 2000 very often, unless going downhill.

I cruise at 1500 if I am just cruising.... get into 6th for mileage...

But, if I am in a place where I might want to get going... usually 2000 to 2200..

I hover around 2k normally. Faster if I am considering a pass using Vtec. Not really much below that because I am afraid it is lugging the engine anything below 1500.
