1) Redline 5w-20
2) Amsoil XL 5w-20
3) Schaeffer's 5w-20, is a blend but often outperforms M1 5w-20 at only 3/4 of the price
4) Havoline "syn" 5w-20 (The 5w-30 version has been excellent, the 5w-20 is set to launch in about 1-2 months)
Dino:
1) Havoline 5w-20 (Note: Just saw a 12,560 mile run on the 5w-30 version of this oil, outstanding results)
2) Pennzoil 5w-20
I would not run any of these oils past the interval suggested by the MID unless oil analysis is practiced.

Hey Michael, you don't recommend Mobil 1? Where can you buy the first 3 on your list in Central Texas? And once you choose a brand of oil, you should stick with it right?
Any benefit between using syn vs dino? I used to use the pennzoil brand all the time (and Castrol), but I have only used Mobil 1 in my TL. It's about to hit 12K and 60% on MID. Previous changes at 5K, 9K.

If you want to get completely anal about oil go over to the www.bobistheoilguy.com site and join their forum.
I'm completely ruined by that site now. Gotta find out where to get me some GC (german castrol)

Realistically, to spend all that money on Mobil 1 or a full synthetic is kinda pointless. You are giving ur car the 'best' i suppose but the engine is new or newer... it shouldn't make a dang bit of difference. If ur driving in VTEC all the time then maybe a synthetic will be best for you so you can actually go the 3K for an oil change.
What i go by is proven engineering for oil. Some oils contain more wax than others.
I like Castrol GTX. 5quart container at Walmart $8. Oil filter $4. I change every 3K miles which is plenty fine in Seattle climate. Your engine will love u just as much as if you were to spend $25 on Mobil 1.

I have been using the havoline 5w20 dino oil, and mobil 1
oil filters, with a cost of around $20.00 an oil change.
I changed the initial fill at 2700 miles, then again at about 5000 when the mid
said the oil was at 10% (I did not reset the mid at the first oil change).
I will now go by the mid, when the alarm comes on at 10%?
In the TL, I would think synthetic is a waste of money unless you plan on
extended drains, which makes the mid useless.
You pay about 5 times more for syntetic oil, so you would need to go
5 times longer (25,000 miles) between changes to break even which is nuts...
Is synthetic going to prevent wear better at 5000 mile changes?
I would seriously doubt it, and what, you going to have the car for
15 years and 400,000 miles?
How many people keep a car that long?
In 10 years, some sporty hybrids will be out getting 70 mpg and
you will be stuck with that gas guzzling TL.....

Castrol GTX 5w-20=doesn't particularly standout; dude get over the wax stuff. That's ancient.
Havoline 5w-20 for $7 a jug gets my vote.
PZ is also decent but Havoline gets the price advantage.

I think that stuff is overrated, as much as M1 is. GC 0w-30 is SOOO thick, at 12.3cst for the Gold version and 12.3 cst for the Green version...it is way too thick IMO for a Honda/Acura application. 12.2 and 12.3 is almost a light 40wt, as anything >12.5 is considered a 40.

Dunno about Redline. Summit Racing sells it, but Redline is usually $7-$8/qt anyway. Quite expensive, and overkill for most apps. Schaeffer’s is probably the best value in my opinion, as it gives better performance than Mobil 1 at ¾ of the cost. Where are you again in TX? What city? Maybe I can check on the location of some Schaeffer’s outlets for you.
The reason why I somewhat dislike M1 is because it does not handle insolubles, fuel (VERY common problem with Honda V6 engines that Honda denies), and dirt. It’s flashpoint drops quite rapidly due to what I mentioned above. In addition, M1 has consistently shown higher Fe, which is possible increased valvetrain wear.
People automatically assume that because an oil is a syn, it automatically performs better than an oil made with a lesser basestock. This is not necessarily true, as the overall and final chemistry of the oil is what matters. A good example of this is the Amsoil (GrpIII basestock), Schaeffer’s (only 20% PAO) and Havoline (GrpII+ base).
After seeing the recent 12.5K+ oil analysis report with Havoline 5w-30, I’m convinced that Havoline dino can go the full length suggested by the MID. In that 12.5K drain, the oil life monitor (GM’s) suggested a change at 12.5K, the maximum allowable interval. The oil showed that it could’ve gone another 2-3,000 miles.
Thus, syns such as Amsoil and RL are good for high stress applications (racing, super hard, spirited driving), but blends and low cost SM dinos such as Havoline are more than adequate for daily drivers (yes, even for ones that are occasionally driven super hard) at drains suggested by the MID.

Haha, Green where available!
I'm only on 280 miles now so I have a few left to locate some. I think i'm going to swap out oil at 1000 miles and again at 2000 so i can get the floating metal out. I'll probably just use some cheap stuff with molybdenum in it.
After that, I really havent figured out yet what I plan to use. Still shopping. I guess thick isnt too bad of a thing where I live though (Phoenix, AZ) since it gets so stinkin hot here.
