What my dealer told me about tint "scratching"

When I bought my car in July, I had not heard of all the problems with window tint scratching due to the design of the window seals. So I had my windows tinted, and never knew to ask about "moleskins" or anything else. I have had probably 25 cars that I have had the windows tinted on with no problems.

Well, here I am about three months later, with a number scratches on the tint (one window really bad). So I went to the dealer the other day to inquire about what they would do. The lady in the service department immediately told me that she is aware of the fact that all TL and TSX's suffer this problem (including her own TSX). She said that for a while the person they use for tinting was re-doing the windows, but quit because they just kept coming back.

She said they have contacted Acura, and Acura is supposedly working on a fix. She advised me to call Acura's 800 number listed in the manual, and go on record that I have the problem. I have not had time to do this yet. Has anyone contacted Acura? BTW, she had never heard of moleskins.

haven't done this but this is great info - with newly tinted windows I've been developing hairline scratches (and the moleskin kit is sitting in my trunk...)

my tint shop lied to me when i got my car tinted... heh trying to take advantage of a 17 year old. They said that they had done many 04TL's and said that they havnt had one complaint with them yet. Well i went with the most expensive tint with the extra scratch protection, and now my windows look as if they were the windows on some public transit bus. I have called them several times, and emailed them, but they have yet to call me back.

I think they are due for a visit from me to have a little chit chat with my situation.

We took our TL back and had the tint re-done - with moleskin. No problems after 3 months.

In the meantime I called ACS and lodged my complaint. They (ACS) didn't offer any help - only to say that the car was not designed for tint. A little rediculous, considering how many cars have tinted windows from the factory, or aftermarket. I think the customer service reps have to take special training to be able to respond like that without laughing.

Hopefully enough people will complain and we'll get some relief. The biggest unknown is just how long the moleskin solution will last.

This is not just a problem with our Acura's, a lot of other car manufactures have had similier situations occur.

Yeah, maybe they need to "train" their dealers to quit selling tinting to make additional profit if they aren't designed for tint.

Let me guess who your dealer was -- Champion Acura? Exact same thing they told me a week ago.

So I guess Acura has been working on this for 8 months now? Must be working real hard on it.

It's only needed on 3G TL's. Different design=different problems.

They were supposed to fix it in the 05's, but maybe they will do it in the 06's.

Yea mine has some fine scratches in the middle of the window, but my 03 C230 Benz did it and my 87 Porsche does it too, so I dunno.

I am not aware of any cars or truck that come from the factory with tint film applied to the insides of the windows. Factory tint is a tint inside the glass (either smoky-colored glass or a plastic film between glass layers). Factory tinted windows therefore don't have a scratching problem.
